Our Federal Government client is the Australian Government’s national cancer control agency. They provide leadership and vision, support to consumers and health professionals and make recommendations to the government about cancer policy and priorities.

The role

The Assistant Director, Media and Communications plays a key role in the development and implementation of media and communication activities which shape and influence the national cancer control agenda.

Key accountabilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Creatively conceptualise, formulate and execute targeted and engaging health promotion and communication strategies to maximise reach of the organisation
  • Develop and maintain relationships with departmental and ministerial media and communication advisors and maintain a sound understanding of business portfolio and relevant Ministerial and Department of Health and Aged Care priorities.
  • Provide communications advice to the CEO and senior executive, in the development of strategic responses to emerging cancer issues of importance in the public consciousness and on the development of key cancer awareness and organisational messages.
  • Develop high quality evidence based written communication materials including media releases, speeches for the CEO, cancer awareness messages for diverse audiences and communication channels.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with media contacts and networks to increase nation-wide media coverage.
  • Coordinate media interviews with the organisation identified spokespersons and provide appropriate briefings.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in media, journalism, communications or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum three years’ experience in the development and implementation of media strategies, including preparation of media releases and media liaison.
  • Experience working closely with or for government on media and communications strategies and messaging.
  • Experience in health, medical, science or related fields is desirable.
  • On occasion, this position may need to be available out of hours to respond to media enquiries and event requirements.
