As part of our engagement plans for the 2026 Census of Population and Housing, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to recruit an Operational Support Centre Engagement Manager to be based in the Broome / Kimberley region.

The position is available from August 2025 to October 2026.

As an Operational Support Centre Engagement Manager you will:

  • lead and manage a local team responsible for conducting stakeholder engagement within a diverse and complex environment
  • engage with the public, councils, service providers and community groups within the region
  • assist with attracting, recruiting, onboarding and training a local team responsible for collecting quality Census data
  • promote participation in the Census
  • coordinate travel and WHS practices for your team
  • resolve or escalate queries, issues and incidents
  • undertake procedural, operational and administrative tasks
  • ensure privacy and security of ABS staff information, Census data and materials
  • undertake progressive and final evaluation of Census engagement for your work area.

As part of this role:

  • there is a possibility of work outside of business hours including weekends
  • the roles involve regular regional or remote travel.

What we are looking for (selection criteria)

We are looking for people who are keen to widen their skill set, but have most or all the following:

  • demonstrated experience in supervising and managing teams within a complex environment
  • demonstrated experience engaging with stakeholders
  • strong connection to the local community/region
  • understanding of working in regional and/or remote areas, and willingness to travel to various work areas (as required)
  • ability to understand and comply with ABS policy and guidelines, APS Values and APS Codes of Conduct.

The below skills, qualifications or experience are also highly desired:

  • ability to demonstrate good judgement in problem solving and decision making
  • strong project management skills including risk and issues management
  • strong oral and written communication skills
  • ability to demonstrate cultural competency and/or experience working with Aboriginal and /or Torres Strait Islander peoples, people experiencing homelessness, culturally and linguistically diverse groups and/or people with low literacy or low digital literacy
  • demonstrated experience working with the public, service providers and community groups.
