As a Technical Officer – Science & Environment at CDU, you will play a vital role in delivering engaging, hands-on learning and research experiences for students across a range of science and environment disciplines.
This position provides both general and chemistry-focused technical support, working across the Faculty of Science and Technology’s laboratories, technical facilities, and off-campus fieldwork sites. You will collaborate closely with academic and professional staff to ensure the smooth delivery of practical classes, while maintaining equipment, resources, and a safe working environment. A key part of the role is supporting and promoting compliance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) standards across all teaching and research activities.

About You
To be successful, you will require:

  • Completion of a relevant tertiary qualification in science, environmental science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience in a laboratory or fieldwork environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical support for teaching and research activities, including preparation, maintenance, and operation of laboratory or field equipment.
  • Knowledge and application of WHS principles, including conducting risk assessments and ensuring compliance in laboratory and fieldwork settings.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including collaborating with colleagues across Faculties.
  • Ability to manage consumables and equipment inventory, including procurement, stock control, and accurate record-keeping.
  • Willingness and capacity to support activities at remote, regional, and off-campus locations, including equipment logistics and travel arrangements.
  • Additional Key Selection Criteria at Level 5
  • Proven ability to repair and maintain laboratory and fieldwork equipment, ensuring compliance with operational and WHS standards.
  • Experience in preparing financial costings for teaching and research activities, tracking expenditures, and providing reports to Faculty management.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the development and implementation of technical procedures, including reviewing and updating WHS documentation and other governance-related processes.

Desirable Competencies

  • Possession of a current 4x4 driving certification and coxswain qualification to support off-campus and fieldwork activities.
  • Completion of a degree in Chemistry or Engineering
