Behaviour Support Practitioner

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) practitioner uses evidence-based strategies to help individuals with behaviours of concern, aiming to improve their quality of life and promote positive change. PBS practitioner focuses on understanding the reasons behind challenging behaviours and develops interventions to address those reasons by modifying the environment and building skills to reduce the need for restrictive practices

Behaviour Support Practitioner is required to undertake Behaviour Support assessments (including Functional Behavioural assessments) and to develop behaviour support plans that may contain the use of restrictive practices.

Clinical Duties

To provide Behaviour Support in a safe and effective manner. Therapy should be goal orientated, time limited and measurable.

To implement therapy programs according to the individual needs of each participant, to achieve these goals and to teach techniques and (where necessary) to improve personal independence with regard to physical function, personal care, leisure, domestic, community, avocational and vocational status.

To participate in relevant team and family meetings

To educate patients’ families and friends and involve them in therapy sessions where appropriate.

To work co-operatively with support staff.

To maintain written records in line with report writing Progress standards.

Knowledge

Demonstrate an understanding of:

Knowledge and commitment to the principles, philosophy and current directions of My Future My Way and NDIS

Substantial knowledge of the issues confronting children and adults with childhood neuro-developmental disabilities and their families

Child development and family systems

Grief, loss and trauma

Principles of Family Centred Practice

Mandated Notification of Child Abuse and observing Duty of Care

Workforce Health and Safety Legislation and Equal Opportunity Legislation

Experience

Advanced written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate with participants, their families, the clinical team and community-based health professionals.

Demonstrated skills in Positive Behaviour Support

Demonstrated ability to apply the NDIS Quality Safeguards and Standards relating to Specialist Behaviour Support in practice

An understanding of SA legislative requirements relating to Restrictive practice

Demonstrated organisational ability in time and caseload management.

Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, flexibly and conjointly with staff from other disciplines as part of a client focused multidisciplinary team.

Demonstrated commitment to professional development, through maintaining a current knowledge of relevant literature, clinical development, electronic devices, and by attending relevant courses.

Completion of the child related employment screening.

Experience in working with challenging behaviours

Sound knowledge of intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder

Positive parenting approaches.

Trauma informed practice

Cross cultural awareness and sensitivity to vulnerable population groups

Desirable

Relevant post-graduate qualifications, obtained, or working towards.

Bachelor Degree in Social Work/ Psychology/ Developmental Education

Eligibility for professional membership

PBS registration with NDIS

Remote work/ work from home possible
