Principal Communications Advisor – Strategic Transformation & Stakeholder Engagement
Contract to November 2025 | Full-Time | Inner Melbourne Council | Possible Extension
Step into a pivotal senior role with a high-performing local government team driving transformation and community outcomes. This inner Melbourne council – known for its dynamic culture and progressive leadership – is seeking an experienced Principal Communications Advisor to shape and lead key communications strategies across the organisation.
Working within the Organisation Capability division, you will be embedded in a collaborative Communications Department, where your expertise will directly support complex transformation initiatives and manage reputational risk through proactive, strategic engagement.
About the Role
As Principal Communications Advisor, you will:
Lead the development and execution of high-impact communications strategies.
Provide trusted advice to senior executives, staff and stakeholders on best practice communications.
Play a key role in navigating a political environment – influencing how the organisation communicates with its community and internal teams.
Oversee broad strategic transformation projects, ensuring communications are aligned with organisational values and goals.
Drive change through effective messaging, stakeholder management and campaign delivery.
Key selection criteria:
Proven experience in a senior communications role, ideally within local government or a complex public sector environment.
Exceptional communication skills – written, verbal, and strategic – with an ability to translate complex issues into clear, effective messaging.
A strong track record managing communications for major infrastructure projects.
A proactive, enthusiastic approach to problem-solving and team contribution.
Skills & Requirements
Tertiary qualification in Communications, Public Relations or a related field (or equivalent experience).
Demonstrated experience planning and delivering end-to-end communications strategies.
Strong project management skills and a deep understanding of digital communications trends and governance.
