Bibimbiya Jan-ga Buru – Women and Children’s Healing Place

An exciting opportunity for an Advocate position in the Broome FDV Hub led by Family Outreach Service. The Advocate empowers clients by connecting them with essential resources, offering emotional support, and advocating for their rights and safety. This role requires a compassionate, non-judgmental approach and the ability to handle complex situations to ensure clients feel supported and understood as they work toward safety and healing.

Indigenous women are strongly encouraged to apply.

Key responsibilities include:

Conduct safety assessments to evaluate clients’ immediate and ongoing risks, creating tailored safety plans to address their unique situations.

Work with clients to develop practical steps to enhance their safety, including planning for safe exits and accessing emergency resources.

Educate clients on their rights, support options, and the dynamics of domestic violence to empower informed decision-making.

Advocate for clients with various agencies, including legal services, housing, and healthcare providers, ensuring their rights and needs are met.

Coordinate referrals to relevant support services, such as legal aid, housing, counselling, and financial assistance.

Provide immediate support and de-escalation techniques for clients in crisis, ensuring they feel safe and understood

Develop and maintain trusted relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to ensure a coordinated systems approach

Maintain a client case load

Work collaboratively with other FDV Hub staff, to provide a coordinated, holistic approach to support.

The person we seek

To be successful in this role you will have the following capabilities:

Experience working in an FDV, trauma, or crisis service environment.

Knowledge of Kimberley agencies and appropriate support services for the client group.

Apply First Aid Certificate, or ability to attain one.

Experience in working with Kimberley Indigenous communities.

Skills and capacity to engage with government and non-government stakeholders relevant to the project

Proficiency in the use of MS Word, Excel, /email, and familiarity with client management systems

Ensure working practices are culturally sound and ability to communicate effectively in the Kimberley cultural context

Ability to travel to Derby and Bidyadanga

Qualifications and / or training:

A current National Police Clearance (prior to commencement)

A current WA Driver’s Licence

A current Working with Children Check (prior to commencement)

Ability to undertake all training required for FOS/FDV Hub staff.

Selection Criteria:

Proven experience providing support to individuals experiencing domestic violence, with knowledge of trauma-informed and client-centred practices.

Strong skills in conducting risk assessments, developing safety plans, and managing crisis in high-stress situations.

A commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism when dealing with sensitive information.

Ability to manage multiple client cases, maintain accurate records, and ensure compliance with organisational standards.

Knowledge of the Kimberley Cultural context, awareness of the needs of diverse populations, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and a commitment to providing culturally safe services.

What we offer

$98,000 per annum, pro rata (4 years with possibility of extension), 5 weeks Annual Leave with 17.5% leave loading, SGC superannuation, Not for Profit generous Salary packaging, Anniversary payment after 12 months of employment, additional 3 days leave at Christmas, access to Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and study opportunities. Family Outreach Service (FOS) has partnered as Lead Agency for the Broome FDV Hub with Anglicare WA as the co-lead and Nirrumbuk Aboriginal Corporation, Jalygurr Guwan Aboriginal Corporation, Broome Circle and Legal Aid WA to provide a range of specialist supports for people experiencing family and domestic violence, including advocacy, counselling, legal assistance, and support for children.

The FDV Hub is a welcoming, community-based support service dedicated to providing a safe and nurturing environment for all women and children who have experienced, or are currently facing, family and domestic violence (FDV). We offer a range of support services all in one location, including counselling, case management, legal assistance, financial counselling, advocacy, and therapeutic programs, to help women heal from trauma and regain control of their lives. To support parents and caregivers, we also provide a creche service during appointments and group sessions. Our goal is to empower every client by offering culturally appropriate and secure, trauma-informed care in a supportive, non-judgemental space where they can rebuild their strength, confidence and resilience.
