Position Overview
(Full Time/ Part Time/ Casual)
As a Kerbside Collection Operator, you will assist in the provision of an efficient and reliable waste removal service for the community that is responsive, and customer focused which contributes to the delivery of a healthy urban and natural environment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Operate Kerbside Collection Truck on designated routes as per Council’s service guidelines and service levels to facilitate the collection of kerbside waste bins in accordance with the approved program and specifications.
Drive and operate kerbside collection truck in accordance with Council’s policies and procedures and applicable regulations, laws and other instruments as required, including adherence to applicable EPA regulations and legislation. This includes difficult driving conditions and areas such as school zones, residential areas, cul-de-sacs and unsealed roads, etc.
Use judgement and problem-solving skills to resolve issues that arise during the operation of the vehicle, including any traffic and road conditions.
Transport and dispose of waste at Council’s landfill site (or alternative site) to enable emptying of waste and continuation of route services.
Complete daily safety inspection checklist and report any faults/repairs found to ensure roadworthiness of vehicle and equipment.
Competently operate mobile computer devices, technology, and Council applications, including future technology enhancements.
Assist with training new drivers in operating plant and equipment and familiarising themselves with routes.
Work with supervisors and support staff to plan and prioritise collections and workloads to ensure safe operations and to minimise risks.
Utilise onboard computer technology systems to support safe operations and service delivery and to monitor contamination or service reporting.
Report all incidents and accidents via Council’s procedures, including damage to bins or private property, spills and other specific environmental elements that impact on the community.
Complete all relevant documentation, reporting and records as required for the waste services operations.
Provide a high level of maintenance and care to plant and equipment, conducting daily checks and reporting as per Council Policy and Procedure.
Participate in toolbox talks, safety discussions and process improvements.
Participate in community education initiatives to support organisational goals.
Other duties which may be required by the Supervisor, Team Leader or Manager from time to time.
Place non-compliance stickers on waste bins to notify residents when the limitations of the service are exceeded, of contamination of bins or other requirements as required.
General
Ensure adherence to Council’s Work Health and Safety and Risk Management policies and procedures
Ability to work autonomously and with a high degree of self-initiative
Encourage knowledge sharing, development and innovation within the team to assist during scheduled absences and when otherwise required
Provide timely feedback to supervisors, team leaders and support staff on actions or completion of customer service requests in line with Council’s Customer Service Charter
Person Specification – Skills, Knowledge and Experience
Essential
Current South Australian HR driver’s licence
Demonstrated experience operating heavy vehicles
Understanding of Heavy Vehicle National Law and Chain of Responsibility obligations
Sound literacy / numerical skills and ability to read and interpret maps and use of computers
Demonstrated strong customer focus which is accurate, responsive, timely and courteous
Demonstrated team member with strong communication skills
Demonstrated customer service skills
Ability to work unsupervised
Demonstrated ability to provide flexible and enthusiastic work practices
Organisational skills, including time management and prioritisation of daily tasks and to think ahead
Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with a diverse range of individuals, organisations and groups
Desirable
Experience in operating waste collection vehicles
Hazard identification and assessment in the waste management industry
Knowledge of chemical, dust and other dangerous substances which operators in the waste industry may be exposed
Reporting and recording of hazards in waste management
Knowledge of the importance of workplace safety, responsibilities of the employer and the employee
An appreciation of quality management and best practice principles
Current First Aid Certificate
Position Requirements

Physical Requirements
Daily work will be performed in an outdoor environment, as such:
You will be exposed to those conditions normally encountered in an outdoor environment.
Physical demands are moderate to strenuous, consisting of the ability to sit, stand, stoop, reach, bend, climb, lift and pull using safe manual handling practices.
You must be able to see and hear in the normal range, with or without correction, and communicate well both verbally and in written form, and must be able to be understood.
The work environment includes sitting and climbing in and out of a vehicle/truck.
As the requirements of the job are of a physical nature, we require employees to complete a pre-employment screening assessment, to ensure that they have the physical capacity to perform the role.
Records Management
Be responsible and accountable for adequately managing corporate records created and received according to Council’s policies, procedures and legislation.
