The Department of Lands, Planning and Environment (DLPE) was established with a clear vision that the Northern Territory’s natural and cultural assets are managed sustainably for the benefit of all. The Department leads a strategic land resource assessment program that underpins land use planning, economic development, improved land management and conservation initiatives.

Positioned within DLPE, the Heritage Branch consists of a team of experts dedicated to conserving the unique cultural heritage of the NT. This position provides the opportunity to liaise with a variety of stakeholders, improve systems to manage archaeological and heritage information and influence policy. The successful candidate will have experience in the management of Aboriginal archaeological places and consultation with Aboriginal stakeholders.

As a Senior Heritage Officer your primary objective is to provide expert advice on the likely impacts of development on places protected by the Heritage Act 2011, assess the heritage significance of places and objects by conducting research, remote fieldwork and consultation with stakeholders. This position predominately focuses on the conservation of prescribed Aboriginal archaeological places (as defined under the Heritage Act) and includes other heritage management responsibilities and tasks.

Your key responsibilities include working with the team to provide advice to stakeholders on the likely impacts of development on places protected by the Heritage Act, lead efforts in the protection and conservation of prescribed Aboriginal archaeological places and objects and undertake assessment of a range of places and objects of potential heritage significance.

To be successful, you require a tertiary qualification in archaeology, cultural heritage, anthropology or related field, demonstrated experience in Aboriginal archaeological site survey and/or management and have a sound understanding of key sector documents such as Heritage Impact Statements, Cultural Heritage Management Plans and archaeological survey reports, or proven ability to quickly acquire this knowledge.
