Position Summary

The Assistant Dean supports the Dean of Students and assists with academic, social and wellbeing support for students living at Dunmore Lang College.

This role is supervised by the Dean of Students and works in cooperation with the professional staff, Senior Duty, Senior Resident Adviser and Resident Advisers to ensure the College provides a safe, secure and supportive environment for all students.

Experience of working with students in a university setting, preferably in a residential setting, is required as is a commitment to upholding the core principles of equity and diversity, inclusion, equality & respect. A summary of the College’s values is attached to this Position Description.

An important facet of this role is the ability to provide leadership as a role model by demonstrating the highest levels of personal and professional integrity, discretion, fairness, and transparency in all aspects of personal conduct and decision-making.

Working hours may vary across the year in response to the different needs of students during the academic semesters.

The Assistant Dean may be part of the on-call Senior Duty team and may, if required, be asked to deputise for the Dean of Students.

The Assistant Dean will be required to undertake Resident Adviser and staff training as required, which is provided by the College.

· An ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks at varying stages to completion.

· Excellent communication skills including being comfortable to engage with a variety of key stakeholders including students, academic tutors and university partners.

· A clear understanding of confidentiality and the importance of acting with discretion and personal integrity.

· A proactive approach to helping others when required.

Essential

· An undergraduate degree from an accredited provider

· Demonstrated experience of working with, engaging with and relating to young people in a university setting (similar areas such as social work, youth work, psychological services and counselling will be considered)

· A strong understanding of the key welfare, health, educational and cultural issues affecting university students

· A high level of accuracy and strong attention to detail

· Strong organisational skills including an ability to handle several projects simultaneously while maintaining a focus on timelines and completion deadlines

· A strong understanding and experience of working with IT including Microsoft programmes, website, social media and data analysis

· Strong writing and presentation skills

· Demonstrated ability to manage personal and professional boundaries and provide leadership through personal attitudes and behaviours

· NSW Police check and WWCC or willingness to obtain both

· Cultural competency and demonstrated ability to work across diverse communities with sensitivity and respect

· Current Australian driver’s licence

Desirable

· Previous experience in an educational and/or residential environment

· Advanced IT skills and / or knowledge of the Synergetic system

You will report to:

· The Dean of Students.

· Senior Management Team in the Dean’s absence.

You will be working with:

· College staff team.

· College visitors.

· Macquarie University Accommodation, Walanga Muru (Indigenous Student Centre at Macquarie University), Widening Participation, Macquarie International and the Macquarie University College.

Service Benchmarks
Student Wellbeing and Engagement

· Actively contribute to a welcoming, inclusive and supportive College community for all students

· Actively support the College’s wellbeing and student connection to activities

· Provide connection and support for students in need of advice and support for their academic, social and emotional wellbeing.

· Support students with referrals to external providers where needed and provide regular check-ins and assistance as required.

· Report any concerns regarding student welfare or conduct immediately to the Dean of Students or Principal

· Offer respectful and culturally sensitive support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students as needed, including liaising with the Dean of Students to provide appropriate referrals and engagement.

· Attend formal College events and assist where required

· Role model the College’s Code of Conduct, values and aspirations; leading by example

Student Led Activities

· Attend and provide oversight of the Association of Dunmore Lang Students (ADS) and College events throughout the year

· Support the ADS and their Committee Heads with event planning and guidance

· Assist with planning and management of student orientation programmes: O-Week and 2.O-Week

· Provide activities and initiatives for student wellbeing and connection throughout the College

Academic Support

· Manage the Study Hall and academic tutoring programme.

· Manage the academic speaker and dinner programme in collaboration with the events coordinator

· Prepare an analysis of the student results each semester to be presented to the College management and Board

· Provide tailored academic assistance and mentoring to individual students where required

· Support students with university administrative processes

Student Leadership and Training

· Organise and assist in the recruitment and onboarding of annual student leadership teams

· Facilitate the student leadership programme and attend where necessary

· Organise the senior students’ programme and attend where necessary

· Liaise with the college psychologists regarding bookings and schedules

· Assist the Dean of Students and Admissions with selection, interviewing and processing of applications, and room allocations

· Assist with planning and conducting first year chats

· Regularly meet with members of the student leadership team, providing a point of contact for advice and support

Marketing

· Attend and assist with University Open Day and expos as required

· Update and assist in the management of the College Website

· Work on content, copy, visuals and key information for College Website

· Manage the online chat function on the website

· Support the College with content creation for both digital and physical communication

General Administration

· Assist with Move-in Day preparation and Room Inventory checks

· Assist with supplies for College activities, events and special occasions

· Facilitate and manage ad hoc student programmes and initiatives

· Create informative noticeboards for students about wellbeing, academic and social issues.

· Other duties as directed
