Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Health Services (TAIHS) is a community-controlled organisation committed to providing culturally safe, comprehensive, and accessible health and wellbeing services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Townsville region.
We are currently seeking two dedicated and community-minded Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison/Facilities Officer to join our team. This unique dual-role position plays a vital part in supporting both our clients and our facilities, ensuring that TAIHS continues to deliver high-quality, culturally appropriate services in a safe and welcoming environment.
As the Liaison Officer, you will act as a vital cultural bridge between clients, families, and service providers helping to foster trust, promote access to care, and advocate for the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients. Your knowledge of local cultures, languages, and community connections will be essential in ensuring culturally responsive engagement.
As the Facilities Officer, you will support the day-to-day operations of TAIHS premises, contributing to the safe, clean, and functional environment needed to deliver our health and community programs. This includes assisting with maintenance coordination, site cleanliness, logistics, and general support tasks across the organisation.

Your Contribution
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison/Facilities Officer plays a key role in building strong, respectful, and inclusive relationships between TAIHS and diverse cultural communities, with a strong focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engagement. This role supports cultural capability across the organisation and leads initiatives that promote culturally safe practices, programs, and environments. The role includes on-call support, ensuring prompt response to urgent after-hours facilities issues impacting company assets, clients, staff and visitors.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Cultural Liaison & Engagement
- Act as a conduit between communities, staff, and service users
- Provide guidance on the cultural appropriateness of facility designs, renovations, and public spaces
- Consult and collaborate with Traditional Owners, Elders, and community representatives on key projects
- Represent the organisation at community meetings, cultural events, and public forums
- Identify emerging issues or community concerns and escalate appropriately
Facilities Support & Operations
- Conduct regular walkthroughs of sites to ensure environments are culturally respectful, clean, and safe
- Assist in coordinating maintenance and repair works that directly impact programs, spaces, or events
- Contribute to project planning and site management activities with cultural considerations in mind
- Patrol and monitor premises (including buildings, car parks, and surrounding areas) to prevent and detect signs of intrusion or unsafe activity
- Enforce access control procedures, check identification, and ensure only authorised personnel enter secure areas
- Respond to alarms, emergencies, disturbances, or incidents in a timely and effective manner
- Write detailed incident reports and maintain accurate security logs
- Monitor CCTV systems and report suspicious activity
- Assist with crowd control during events or peak activity times
- Conduct security checks on doors, windows, fire exits, and safety equipment
- Participate in an on-call roster, responding to urgent facility-related issues after hours and on weekends
- Provide cultural advice and support during after-hours incidents impacting spaces or services
Policy & Safety
- Provide input into the development of policies and procedures that promote cultural safety and inclusion in facilities operations
- Identify risks or barriers to cultural safety in facilities and work with the team to resolve them
- Support compliance with WH&S, access, and emergency procedures through a cultural lens
Qualifications, Licences & Experience
- Certificate or training in Community Development, De-escalation, Facility Services, Community Services or a related area
- Experience in working within a health, community services, education, or government facilities context
- Familiarity with WH&S, risk management, and emergency response procedures
- Current Blue Card (Queensland's Working with Children Check)
- Current C Class Drivers Licence (Qld)
- Identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and has strong cultural knowledge and community ties
- Experience working in liaison, community engagement, or facilities-related roles
- Understanding of the importance of culturally safe spaces for first nation peoples
