The Role

Technical Analysts operate in a collaborative and multi-disciplinary setting, contributing their expertise to solve complex problems. The work is dynamic and evolves with technology changes. Our Technical Analysts, with Network Analysis and Information Security focuses, pursue a range of opportunities to facilitate the identification and understanding of the top cyber threats impacting Australia’s national and economic security.

These roles support Telecommunications, Information Security and Network Analysis focused areas. As such, Technical Analysts will work closely with internal stakeholders to identify and enable novel solutions. Technical Analysts achieve this through the application of critical thinking skills, knowledge of IP-based communications technologies, and analysis of diverse datasets.

All team members are supported in ongoing professional development and training. Successful candidates will receive specialised on-the-job training and access to relevant industry-related courses to develop your skills and help you build professional networks.

ASD 4, 5 & 6 Technical Analysts undertake a combination of the following tasks:

  • Research and analysis of communications technologies and networks to craft collection strategies, optimise collection activities and inform capability development decisions.
  • Apply data literacy techniques to collate, manipulate and transform structured and unstructured data sets.
  • Develop new methods and tradecraft to analyse and exploit data for intelligence or information security purposes.
  • Develop expertise of cyber threats and geopolitical issues relevant to the Australian threat landscape.
  • Develop knowledge of cyber techniques and frameworks, such as MITRE ATT&CK.
  • Develop knowledge of legislative, policy and security frameworks.
  • Mentoring and/or managing less experienced staff to develop their skills and achieve organisational outcomes.

ASD4 additional duties: will operate with direction to achieve outcomes. You will conduct research and analysis and document findings to inform ASD and partner activities to protect and defend Australia from cyber threats.

ASD5 additional duties: will operate with limited direction to achieve outcomes, drawing on your relevant career experience to leverage internal knowledge, skills and subject matter expertise as necessary. You will develop and apply your analytic rigour, and support capability development initiatives. You may write and edit foreign signals intelligence products.

ASD6 additional duties: will operate autonomously with minimal direction and may lead a small to medium-sized team to achieve outcomes. You will build productive working relationships across ASD and the wider National Intelligence Community, and provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced staff.
