HBT GmbH, headquarters in Luenen, Germany, is a world-class machine manufacturer and fully integrated single solution provider specialising in systems and equipment for underground coal mining. The company exports its high-performance longwall mining equipment to all major mining markets worldwide, strategically located in 15 countries including Australia.
The core HBT facilities have the capability for research, development, design, manufacture and testing of longwall mining equipment in-house. All HBT products and systems are produced to the highest standards and compliant with international regulatory requirements.
As part of HBT Group, Waratah Engineering is a leading manufacturer of underground mining equipment. We manufacture and support custom-built mining equipment such as shuttle cars, feeder breakers and multi-bolters as well as offering bespoke remanufacturing services for other underground equipment. We have a significant amount of work in our longwall workshop for 2025 and are looking for skilled people to lead our teams on the workshop floor.
About the role
We have two positions available - one is Mechanical, the other Structural. The Leading Hand will be responsible for providing supervision and guidance to our workshop teams, supporting the Workshop Coordinator in managing and allocating work across the team and shifts, and ensuring the teams work safely and adhere to all safety standards. Your role will be across both leading hand duties and on the tools.
Key responsibilities will include the strip and assessment and rebuild and assembly of all aspects of Underground Mining Equipment. You will leverage your technical expertise to audit, repair and replace components on HBT equipment.
About you
We are looking for someone who has:
A willingness to learn and develop current skills
A strong commitment to safety
Previous experience in a supervisor role
Well developed planning and time management skills
Ability to read and interpret schematics
Previous experience working on Longwall underground mining equipment (highly regarded)
Qualifications:
Relevant trade qualifications
Forklift, Dogging and Rigging ticket (desirable)
Working at heights (Desirable)

Terms and Conditions of Employment are as per the HBT Waratah Enterprise Agreement 2024
Base salary $103,764.50 per annum (Leading Hand classification)
Overtime available
9 day fortnight
Day shift 6am-3pm
Access to 2 ‘My Day’ mental health days per annum
EA increases in July 2025 and 2026
Mobile phone allowance
Long service leave after 7 years
One additional public holiday day
