About the business

Sydney Montessori School is a specialist independent school located in the Sutherland Shire, on a wonderful spacious setting close to Gymea station. The school has been operating since 1981, and prides itself on offering an excellent Montessori education from birth to age 12. With increasing enrolments, the school opened a High School component in 2021 commencing with years 7 and extending now to Year 11 in 2025 and Year 12 2026.

The first intakes are capped with low numbers which the school will grow over subsequent years. The school is an authorised 'IB World School' running the International Baccalaureate Diploma program as its Stage 6 (Year 11 & 12) program.

A new building is virtually complete (expected to open in Term 2, 2025). These 6 new rooms (Science rooms/lab, general classrooms, commercial cooking) will provide additional capacity to enrol new students.

About the role

As a new and growing school, the Sydney Montessori School (SMS) requires energetic and enthusiastic High Schools teachers for our secondary program. There will be a mix of full time and/or part-time positions for 2025/26. In particular, expertise and knowledge of English and HSIE; Mathematics & Science and Music, is required. Experience in, or the ability to teach Year 11 or 12 in subject specialties will be required.

Commencing during 2025 or early 2026, we have the potential of two full time roles or a combination of part time roles if required. The ability to teach across subject areas will be of assistance whilst we are in our initial start-up growth phase.

The school will build on the existing Montessori philosophy and deliver an initial program consistent with the International Baccalaureate programs (MYP / Diploma and CP).

The roles involve teaching in our Secondary program, however, teachers may also deliver lessons (i.e music) as specialists to the upper Primary students. Our school provides a wonderful Primary Montessori learning environment in which each child can grow to their full potential in all spheres of their development – social, intellectual, emotional, physical and spiritual in accordance with the Montessori philosophy. This approach is being continued and extended in establishing our High School program and aligning the secondary program to prepare students for the IB Diploma program.

The role of the teacher includes preparation of the class environment, leading and monitoring the learning of each child, ensuring that the outcomes of the IBO and the NESA curriculum are achieved, communicating student development to parents and working as a member of the educational team discussing and planning for individual children to ensure that we achieve the best outcomes for every child.

The positions would suit enthusiastic teachers who are committed to the development of each child as an individual, who can engage students in their learning and who are committed to work as part of a team to grow our High School program. Experience in, or knowledge of, the International Baccalaureate Program and its pedagogical approach would be considered an advantage. An understanding and ability to teach TOK as part of the IB DP would also be advantageous. Whilst not Montessori in the High school, an understanding of the Montessori philosophy is not mandated, but may also assist new employees to integrate with the school's philosophy. If the potential applicant has no IB experience, but has experience in teaching senior year students in their specialist subject area(s) a willingness to continue to learn and/or undertake training in the IB Diploma program will be required.

Overseas Sponsorship

As sponsorship may be available to an overseas candidate, please indicate what steps, if any, you have taken to determine your eligibility to teach in NSW. Typically this may require an analysis of your degree to determine whether it is accepted by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and/or a review of your certifications by an immigration agent to determine you eligibility to qualify for a work VISA in Australia.

If applicable, further information may be sought or provided during the selection process.

Child-Safe Environment

Sydney Montessori School is committed to providing a child-safe environment and promoting practices that provide for the safety, well-being and welfare of our children and young people at school and in the wider community. All candidates for roles at Sydney Montessori School are subject to screening and assessment against child safety standards as part of our thorough recruitment process.

Benefits and perks

A positive learning environment with very low teacher to student ratios. The opportunity to be part of the establishment of a new High School. We have wonderful parents and students and a genuinely supportive community.

Skills and experience

The position(s) would suit an enthusiastic person currently familiar with middle and senior years teaching approaches, the NESA curriculum, and an understanding of the International Baccalaureate Diploma program.

We expect to employ enthusiastic teachers who are committed to the development of each child as an individual, who can engage students in their learning and who are committed to work as part of a team to grow our new High School.

Experience in, or knowledge of, the NSW (NESA) curriculum and syllabuses and/or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program / CP programs and it’s pedagogical approach would be considered an advantage. IB experience is not a mandated requirement if the staff member demonstrates a willingness to continue to learn and/or undertake training in the IB Diploma program.

Whilst the initial appointments will work across Years 7-11 the ability to demonstrate specialist subject teaching knowledge and breadth of subjects to Year 12 may be an advantage.

Teachers must be currently registered or eligible for NESA registration as a teacher in NSW. A valid Working with Children Check clearance is required.

Applications:

Please send a covering letter (clearly indicating your teaching areas and whether you wish to be considered for Full Time or Part Time roles), a Curriculum Vitae including the name of 2 referees along with your academic transcripts to [email protected]. Please clearly indicate when you will be available to commence (2025/26)

To find out more about the skills and experience required, along with duties and responsibilities for this exciting role, please email or contact Jo on (02) 9526 3000 Email: [email protected]
