The Team

The Roll, Service and Foundations Branch has a focus on contemporary, client-centric service design, service delivery and continuous improvement. This includes emphasis on foundational capabilities for the design and delivery of the electoral roll (including roll operations, products, data and policy), silent elector processing, quality assurance, public engagement and industrial election and ballots service delivery. With a mix of core business, projects and events delivery, the branch offers opportunities to get involved in short-term delivery outcomes and longer-term transformation.

The branch consists of four sections:

  • Roll Operations and Silent Cell (ROSC) – Managing operation of the Australian electoral roll and the centralised silent elector processing cell, including capability development and coordination for other operational elements delivered through our state and divisional offices.
  • Roll Program and Strategy (RPS) – strategic capability charged with innovative design and review of the Australian electoral roll. It pioneers cutting-edge solutions to maintain accuracy completeness and integrity, using -driven insights to enhance service delivery outcomes.
  • Roll Data and Client Engagement (RDCE) – leading support for the AEC’s public engagement capability, expertly handling complex enquiries and service outcomes. The team also provide roll data and products to manage the Australian electoral roll and assist partners in their service delivery requirements.
  • Industrial Elections and Ballots (IEB) – leads the conduct of industrial elections and ballots for organisations registered with the Fair Work Commission, protected action ballots, and fee-for-service electoral events, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.

The Opportunities

We are looking for two outstanding individuals to fill the Director (EL2) positions for:

  • Roll Operations and Silent Cell section (ROSC)
  • Roll Program and Strategy section (RPS)

The AEC manages an electoral roll that is the envy of many international electoral management bodies. With an enrolment rate of 98.2 per cent (7 April 2025), the Directors of both the Roll Operations and Silent Cell and Roll Program and Strategy team will meaningfully contribute to the maintenance of the most complete, accurate and high-integrity electoral roll in the world.

To excel you’ll have:

Mandatory

  • Demonstrated ability to coach, empower and manage staff while developing capabilities, encouraging career development and promoting professionalism.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively (face-to- face, virtually and in writing) whilst anticipating and addressing stakeholder needs (in local or geographically dispersed locations).
  • Established ability to make decisions and manage issues based on professional judgement, evaluating risk and in the context of a complex and changing environment.
  • Proven experience in resourcefulness and collaboration to develop and prioritise effective solutions and fostering positive outcomes.
  • Demonstrated personal integrity and composure under pressure whilst achieving results within legislative and policy parameters.

Desirable

  • 5+ years’ experience in program management, program delivery, project management or related field.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to quickly gain knowledge of, Australian electoral law and practice.
  • Experience in managing high volume, high intensity projects within budget and set timeframes.
