What you'll be doing
Join the WSLHD Mental Health Services as a Peer Worker at the Westmead Mother and Baby Unit, supporting women experiencing perinatal mental health challenges through shared lived experience, empathy, and recovery-focused care.

  • Use your personal recovery journey to offer support, hope and practical guidance.
  • Support mothers and infants in a therapeutic, inclusive and culturally sensitive environment.
  • Promote self-care, empowerment and social connection in perinatal recovery.
  • Collaborate with teams, advocate for consumer needs, and contribute to peer-led activities.
  • Document and educate through a strengths-based, non-clinical approach within the service.

Essential Requirements:

Evidence of Diversity claim: This is a Female Peer Worker Identified position working in the field of perinatal health . Being female is a genuine occupational qualification for this position as described under Section 31 of the Anti-Discrimination Act, 1977 (NSW).

Selection Criteria:

  1. Understanding of and commitment to consumer led recovery principles in the perinatal stage with the ability to utilise your lived and living experiences to support others with their own mental health recovery journey. Demonstrating stories of hope and resiliency.
  2. Have your own lived and living experience of mental ill health and recovery as a mother with child including using mental health services and a willingness to share experience in a professional manner.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of the areas of mental health that relate to the perinatal period of life including relevant policy and guidance.
  4. Demonstrated ability to individually and systemically advocate for mental health consumers.
  5. Willingness to undertake and complete Certificate IV Mental Health Consumer Peer Work course with MHCC. Course to be completed within 18 months of starting Peer Work.
  6. Demonstrated good written and verbal communication skills, including the use of Microsoft office.
  7. Demonstrated good organisational and planning skills to organise one’s own daily work.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team and actively contribute to the further development of Peer Work in WSLHD.
