About the position

Bond University is seeking an experienced and motivated professional to take on the role of Manager – Work Health & Safety. As the sole safety specialist at the University, this pivotal position reports directly to the Chief People Officer and plays a central role in championing a culture of safety across the entire campus.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the delivery and continual improvement of the University’s Safety Management System and Emergency Management framework. Key responsibilities include providing expert guidance on workplace hazards, ensuring legal compliance, overseeing risk registers and audits, managing workers' compensation claims and return-to-work plans, and supporting high-risk areas such as laboratories.

This is a hands-on, operational role that requires both deep subject matter expertise and the ability to build strong relationships across all levels of the University. The successful candidate will be a confident and collaborative leader, capable of delivering firm, informed advice while fostering a proactive safety culture. Your ability to navigate complex WHS challenges, influence diverse stakeholders, and take personal accountability for both strategic and practical outcomes will be essential to your success in this critical position.

About the person

The ideal applicant will have:

An undergraduate degree with significant study in WHS, postgraduate qualifications in specialist Work Health and Safety matters; and/or equivalent level of expertise gained from a combination of experience, training, professional accreditation and qualifications.

Current Building Fire Safety Advisor, Rehabilitation and Return to Work Coordinator and Advanced First Aid qualifications.

A breadth of understanding of multiple workplace hazards and the detailed principles of their identification and analysis, along with a detailed understanding of all principles of work health and safety risk management and their application in a complex diverse setting.

Detailed knowledge of all legal processes for WHS compliance, workers compensation law and common law liability, along with a detailed knowledge and understanding of emergency and critical management principles as they apply in a large institution.

Proven leadership and supervision skills, with high-level negotiation abilities and problem-solving expertise.

Demonstrated ability to analyse complex WHS and workers compensation problems and the ability to develop policies in WHS and workers compensation.

Highly effective written and oral communication skills, including experience presenting to committees and facilitating training sessions.

A breadth of industry experience will be highly regarded as well as experience working in a tertiary environment.

Salary details

The commencing salary for this role is $109,525.60 per annum plus 12% superannuation (negotiable commensurate with skills and experience).
