About the role
Based at our Newstead office, the Mechanical Engineer is accountable for administering applications for design and vehicle approvals under the PBS scheme. Through application of their engineering qualifications, robust understanding of the PBS standards, approval framework and the ability to manage complex relationships with internal and external stakeholders, this role will facilitate the design, construction and commissioning of innovative PBS vehicles. As an engineering professional, the role will also contribute to the NHVRs technical capacity through the provision of technical and engineering advice and the assessment and simulation of the dynamic performance of heavy vehicles
Key responsibilities of this role are:
Provide sound engineering advice to the Chief Engineer, and other areas of NHVR as required, on heavy vehicle safety and productivity matters.
- Review, assess and determine PBS applications, applying the assessment rules and policy frameworks.
- Provide engineering input into the development, implementation and evaluation of national standards, policies and strategic initiatives relating to the PBS scheme and standards.
- Provide engineering and technical advice to internal and external stakeholders relating to the PBS scheme.
- Contribute to technical aspects of vehicle regulation by identifying opportunities to improve the productivity and safety of the heavy vehicle industry and providing sound engineering and policy advice.
- Contribute to development, review and implementation of projects designed to ensure continuous improvement of the PBS Scheme.
- Liaise, negotiate and effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders by providing accurate advice and encouraging cooperative compliance and enforcement with regard to vehicle regulations.

About You
As the ideal candidate you will have a depth of experience in a similar position and will be well versed in heavy vehicle engineering and its associated standards and legislation.
Motivated to contribute to outcomes, you will be an out of the box thinker, who thrives in solving complex technical matters and discussions. Your exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills will see you successfully work with a diverse internal and external group.
To be successful in this role you will possess
- Have 3+ years of experience in the mechanical engineer industry including the heavy vehicle vehicles.
- Hold a Mechanical Engineer Degree
- Have high attention to detail and the demonstrated experience with dealing complex problems.
- Previous exposure to computer simulation of vehicles e.g Universal Mechanism or similar would be advantageous.
