We are looking to fill a Coordinator Civil Engineering role within our City Development Branch. This position is responsible for overseeing multiple civil engineering teams providing leadership and organisation to support consistent, high-quality engineering outcomes across planning and operational works applications.

You’ll play a key role in guiding the delivery of customer-focused, performance-based engineering assessments in collaboration with internal planning and engineering teams, the development industry, and government partners. Your work will help ensure that the City’s infrastructure meets current and future needs and aligns with strategic goals.

This role is ideal for someone with effective leadership, organisation, and communication skills, who thrives on collaborating, driving team performance, and translating strategic goals into practical delivery.

About the team:

City Development is responsible for the management and assessment of development applications, developer contributions, planning appeals, research, and the provision of expert planning, building, and technical advice.

Within City Development, the Engineering and Landscape Assessment (ELA) Business Unit is responsible for the assessment of operational work applications (detailed designs) and providing specialist advice on engineering and landscape matters in the context of development applications (such as reconfiguration of lot or material change of use). ELA works closely with colleagues in planning, infrastructure, and asset management to ensure decisions are well-informed.

The ELA Business Unit provides excellent opportunities to collaborate with industry professionals on development applications and to contribute to shaping the City’s future through the provision of expert technical assessments and advice.

About your new role:

As a Coordinator of Civil Engineering, you will manage assessment teams to ensure that developer contributed assets are designed in accordance with the Gold Coast City Plan, relevant standards and specifications. You will also oversee assessment of private infrastructure in the development assessment context. In this role, you will report to the Manager Engineering and Landscape Assessment.

You’ll be part of a pivotal phase in the Gold Coast’s development, where your expertise will play a crucial role in shaping the region’s future. In this Coordinator position, you’ll have the opportunity to influence the City’s infrastructure and contribute to Council, State, and private development projects.

As a Coordinator Civil Engineering, you’ll guide the civil engineering teams and contribute to finding solutions which facilitate development. Working closely with a wide range of internal stakeholders, development industry, and State government partners, you’ll have the chance to make a lasting difference.

Key roles and responsibilities are to:

Provide strategic leadership and direction to civil engineering team leaders and staff, ensuring alignment with departmental objectives. Act as the primary liaison between the Manager, Civil Engineering Leaders and internal stakeholders to drive coordinated, high-quality service delivery.

Encourage a proactive, solutions-focused approach to development application assessments, working collaboratively with internal teams and industry partners, by promoting a culture of responsiveness, and innovation in addressing complex issues.

Manage resources to ensure team objectives are supported effectively.

Provide advice and strategic direction to planners, internal departments, and other stakeholders, supporting integrated decision-making processes, future projects, policy reviews and development assessment.

Maintain oversight of incoming development applications, identifying complex or high-risk matters early. Ensure that workloads are distributed across teams in a way that provides diversity and appropriate handling of all applications.

Review and approve technical memorandums with recommendations and assessment outcomes, ensuring consistency and alignment with legislative frameworks, planning schemes, and organisational standards.

Drive performance and team development by monitoring key metrics, facilitating regular meetings, and addressing operational challenges and opportunities to foster professional growth and build team resilience.

In keeping with the City’s commitment to flexible working, we are open to exploring flexible work arrangements that help balance life and work commitments while delivering high-quality outcomes.

We're looking for people who have:

Consistently deliver high-quality service to both internal and external stakeholders, with a strong focus on collaboration, customer outcomes, and practical, solution-oriented advice.

Demonstrate leadership, organisation, and staff management skills, with the ability to guide team performance and support professional growth.

Can interpret and apply planning schemes, engineering standards, and legislative frameworks relevant to development assessment, ensuring advice is accurate, consistent, and aligned with City outcomes.

Are adaptable and proactive, with the ability to quickly learn and apply new systems, tools, and processes in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Maintain a constructive and professional attitude toward feedback and continuous improvement, contributing to a positive, high-performing team culture.

Hold a Bachelor Degree in Engineering or Town Planning or possess equivalent knowledge and experience in a development assessment context.

This role is ideal for someone with leadership, organisation, and communication skills, who thrives on building connections, driving team performance, and translating strategic goals into deliverable outcomes.
