About Major Events and Public Programs
The Major Events and Public Programs (MEaPP) group is responsible for the planning and executing of several flagship events to support the Institute in telling the story of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australia and shaping our national narrative. The team is also responsible for the delivery of public programs including hosting external and VIP visitors.
The team works collaboratively with other program areas across AIATSIS.
About the Role
The Director, Major Events and Public Programs, will oversee a range of flagship events and public program activities that incorporate all areas of AIATSIS. In successfully delivering against the strategic priorities of the Institute. The role is instrumental in the development and maintenance of key stakeholder relationships, including with Traditional Owners, community organisations, corporate partners, and suppliers. The Director, Major Events and Public Programs will work autonomously in leading a team of highly professional and skilled event planners and will need to demonstrate strong leadership, prioritisation, communication, collaboration, project management, and analytical skills. The work of the Major Events and Public Programs team is varied, fast paced and dynamic and extends across the whole agency. The small team works collaboratively with other groups across the Institute to achieve its goals and contribute to the Institutes shared key performance indicators. The Director, Major Events and Public Programs, will be an experienced and highly successful large-scale conference and event planner, who is able to multitask, work to competing deadlines and thrives in a fast-paced work environment.
Key responsibilities of the role include:
- managing and leading the operation of the program, including administration, resource and financial management, staff management and development, recruitment, and program planning.
- leading the strategic direction of the program, including developing business plans, setting priorities and monitoring performance.
- managing and leading the development of sustainable and ethical sponsorship and partnership prospectus documents for major events.
- making high level decisions and take responsibility for the performance and outputs of the program.
- taking a lead role in the implementation of the Institute’s public program priorities.
- providing input into relevant policies, priorities, operational practices and activities that support AIATSIS objectives and vision.
- providing written reports, submissions, and complex correspondence, as required.
- engaging and managing internal and external stakeholders and service providers through collaboration, negotiation, and resolving conflict and managing sensitivities.
- other duties as required.
Our Ideal Candidate
To be successful in this role, you will have proven leadership in cultivating productive working relationships with demonstrated cultural competence and experience in delivering large scale conferences and events. You will be highly motivated to work with autonomy and also collegiately in a small team across locations.
You will come with the following skills, experience and attributes:
- demonstrated ability to deliver large-scale conferences and events.

- proven ability to shape strategic thinking, provide strategic advice, along with the ability to solve complex issues and translate strategy into operational goals.
- demonstrated ability to develop and manage projects, including multifaceted conferences and events.
- demonstrated ability to communicate with influence. Strong interpersonal, negotiation, liaison, and collaborative skills.
- formal event management qualifications and experience with event management platforms (i.e., EventsAir and Award Force) are desirable but not essential.
