Maari Ma Health is an Aboriginal community-controlled regional health service that has been providing a quality service to the Aboriginal people of far western New South Wales for more than 20 years and employs over 140 people within the region.
About the role
Our multidisciplinary team is looking for a registered nurse with experience working with children and their families in a primary health setting and experience supporting clinics to join us to provide a quality health service to the Aboriginal families of far western New South Wales. Reporting to the Manager Healthy Start, this full-time opportunity.

Key Responsibilities
- Work as part of the Child and Family Health program within the Maari Ma footprint, to ensure safe and effective paediatric services.
- Foster innovation in practice that contributes to the delivery of quality care.
- Implement a ‘two-way learning’ approach: preceptor Aboriginal Health Practitioners, sharing clinical knowledge and skills. Whilst being mentored by the AHPs and building knowledge towards working with families in a culturally appropriate way; seeking feedback from the AHPs regarding your engagement with families, especially when undertaking home visits.
- Actively preceptor the C&FH AHPs through facilitating and guiding on the job training to further develop their role.
- Provide practical and clinical support to the AHPs to assist their work in the community with clients and complete those health checks indicated.
- Encourage staff to provide community care and interact with clients to encourage active engagement with our clients.
- Work in partnership with other health professionals to ensure a multidisciplinary approach to health care and to support best practice, knowledge and skills of practitioners.
- Develop effective interagency partnerships, for example with Broken Hill Health Service, to ensure continuity of care for clients.
- Provide culturally inclusive quality health care to individuals, families and the community within own level of competency and across agreed procedures and protocols, in order to meet expected health outcomes.
- Work closely with Child & Family Health team to support effective communication and consistency in the provision of services for complex and vulnerable children and families.
- Facilitate case conferencing to optimise team care for children and their families. Act as case manager for those selected families who require complex intensive long term support.
- Function as the Cold Chain Coordinator for the Healthy start area, performing duties as per the Cold Chain policy.
- Coordinate paediatrician clinics and out of home care requests.
Skills and experience
- Current unconditional registration with AHPRA as an registered nurse
- Hold a postgraduate qualification relevant to performing the role of a Child and Family Health Nurse.
- Recognised credentials in a preceptorship role or ability to complete a certified Preceptorship course within the first six months of employment.
- Currently possess or able to obtain within 3 months of commencing employment, authorisation as an immunisation provider in New South Wales.
- Evidence of recent post registration experience working with families and young children.
- Ability to work in a way that fosters mutual respect in a cross-cultural environment
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the principles of primary health care and how they relate to maternal and infant health, particularly Indigenous children
- High level of interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to respond effectively to clients who may be challenging to engage.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the principles of population health and primary health care, especially as they relate to Aboriginal communities.
- Computing skills relevant to the position and competent in the use of information and communication technology including Microsoft Word, email and internet applications and the ability to quickly acquire skills in other applications.
- Current unrestricted drivers licence and a safe driving record and ability to undertake regular outreach travel.

- Working Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.00pm only, no shift weekend or on call.

We are seeking Nurses with previous experience working in an Aboriginal Medical Service or within a rural/regional community clinic.
