ROLE

Our client is seeking an experienced and motivated Team Leader to manage and guide a team of regulatory scientists focused on the environmental risk assessment of industrial chemicals.

This team delivers expert risk assessments that contribute to the protection of Australia’s environment and human health. The team also engages with national and international stakeholders to promote continuous improvement and regulatory excellence.

Flexible or remote working arrangements may be considered based on operational requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of scientific staff.

Coordinate environmental risk assessments of industrial chemicals for regulatory purposes.

Review and provide quality assurance for draft assessments, ensuring scientific accuracy and regulatory compliance.

Manage workflow to meet statutory deadlines.

Contribute to long-term planning and strategic direction of the team.

Foster collaboration across government and scientific networks.

REQUIREMENTS

Successful candidates will meet the following criteria:

You must be an Australian citizen to be eligible for employment.

This position requires the successful candidate to obtain, or already hold, a Baseline Vetting security clearance.

Tertiary qualifications in chemistry or a closely related field (e.g., toxicology, biochemistry, chemical engineering).

Experience evaluating the environmental risks of chemicals—including industrial chemical products—preferably within a regulatory context.

The ability to assess chemical fate, ecotoxicity, and environmental exposure in both data-rich and data-poor environments.

Proven experience delivering science-based advice on environmental risks.

Capability to lead, develop and manage a small team within a government context.

Ability to guide staff in interpreting scientific data within regulatory frameworks, ensuring assessments are scientifically sound and compliant with legislation and policy.

Ability to lead, prioritise and meet legislative timeframes under pressure.

Strong critical thinking and analytical skills to ensure risk assessments are scientifically sound and comply with legislation.

Excellent communication skills to convey complex scientific information to non-technical audiences, including policymakers and stakeholders.

Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with government, industry, and scientific stakeholders to support regulatory decisions.
