About the opportunity

The Laboratory Animal Services team is looking for an Assistant Animal Technician to provide animal husbandry services across LAS facilities based at Camperdown and Kolling Institute (RNSH). In this role you will perform routine animal husbandry tasks including cage changing, cage checking and general monitoring of animal health.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • performs routine and some more complex animal care, breeding and technical tasks to a high standard including all aspects of animal husbandry, record keeping and health monitoring
  • ensure that animal records are accurate and up to date, collecting and submitting data for regulatory compliance, financial operations and human resources
  • communicate concerns with animal welfare promptly and assist the Animal Facility Officers and the Animal Welfare Veterinarian in resolving any issues
  • clean all husbandry related equipment and maintain animal facilities in a safe, clean and well-organised state
  • monitor equipment and infrastructure to ensure reliable and safe operation; initiate repairs and maintenance in accordance with relevant approval procedures and manage the ordering and use of consumables to ensure economic operation and continuity of supply
  • implement and monitor compliance with local policies and procedures to support compliance with regulatory requirements including those relating to work health and safety, animal welfare and gene technology
  • participate in an overtime roster providing routine inspections on weekends and delivery of essential animal husbandry tasks on public holidays if required

About you

  • a qualification in a relevant field or the equivalent in training and experience
  • a valid Australian Driver's License
  • a First Aid Certificate or a willingness to obtain one
  • a commitment to animal welfare and to the use of animals in research conducted in accordance with the NSW Animal Research Act and a practical understanding of the outcomes sought by relevant regulatory codes
  • animal handling and animal care skills of a high standard, especially in relation to common laboratory species and experience with SPF principles
  • a willingness to work as part of a team and flexibility to work in any of Laboratory Animal Services' facilities (including availability to work additional hours or to participate in a weekend roster as required).
