About the role
The Addiction Medicine Registrar (Western Health) has a key role within Drug Health Services and the Addiction Medicine Team. The Registrar provides comprehensive specialist care for patients with a wide range of substance use and related disorders and the associated complex comorbidity.
Drug Health Services is a program at Western Health which offers innovative and diverse programs that include Specialist programs for Adults, Women's and Children's Services, Youth and Family Services, Residential Withdrawal Services, West side Lodge Residential Dual Diagnosis Rehabilitation Service and at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre.
The Addiction Medicine Team sits within Drug Health Services and offers Addiction Medicine support across the programs of Drug Health Services and throughout Western Health.
The Addiction Medicine registrar roles sit within:
- The Addiction Medicine Consultation and Liaison Service at Footscray Hospital, Sunshine Hospital and the Sunshine Hospital Emergency Department
- The Addiction Medicine Outpatient Clinic and Specialist Pharmacotherapy Program
- The Residential Withdrawal Unit and Adolescent Residential Withdrawal Unit
- The Hamilton Centre Statewide Service for mental health and addiction
- West side Lodge Dual Diagnosis Rehabilitation Service
- Alcohol and other drug treatment at Dame Phyllis Frost Centre
The Addiction Medicine Registrar is involved in provision of both inpatient and outpatient care for patients with Addiction and co-existing medical, psychiatric and social complexity. The Registrar provides high level Addiction Medicine assessment, treatment and connection to a range of Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment services. The Registrar also provides clinical leadership to the Drug Health Services community teams, and is involved in research and data collection.
These current advertised positions are full time (though requests for part time training are accepted) for 12 months, commencing 2 February 2026.
We offer accredited training in Addiction Medicine for those who are interested in attaining Fellowship of the Chapter of Addiction Medicine AND Advanced training in Addiction Psychiatry. The Advanced training requirements for Addiction Medicine and Addiction Psychiatry may be completed in their entirety at Western Health.
These positions may also be considered by other trainees for relevant clinical experience, within their own chosen discipline.
Applicants will be supported to complete Opioid Replacement Therapy (ORT) Training and receive accreditation to prescribe ORT.
Key responsibilities:
- Involvement in provision of both inpatient and outpatient care for patients with Addiction and co-existing medical, psychiatric, and social complexity.
- Provide high level Addiction Medicine assessment, treatment, and connection to a range of Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment services.
- Provide clinical leadership to the Drug Health Services community teams and is involved in research and data collection.
- Ensure high quality patient care via clinical assessment and development of management and follow up plans.
- Provide day to day clinical management of patients and ensure attendance at ward rounds.
- Assume responsibility for patient care in accordance with the care model of the ward/unit, ensuring that required clinical procedures are performed with appropriate training and supervision.
