About Us

Melbourne Testing Services Pty Ltd (MTS) is an established, NATA-accredited laboratory specialising in testing of construction materials, mechanical components, structural members, automotive & aerospace components and fasteners, to name a few.

Although the tests we do are varied, they mostly involve applying forces for the purpose of proof and destructive loading. Our clients are Government and industry-based manufacturers and suppliers who require research and development, calibration and verification of compliance with Australian and International Standards. Our expert testing and calibration services are provided with a strong reputation for precision, regulatory compliance, and workplace safety. Our team is committed to delivering accurate, reliable results and outstanding customer service.

As our business continues to grow, we are seeking a motivated and hands-on Laboratory Technician to join our experienced team. This role offers variety, technical challenge, and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful testing, analysis, and engineering support in a mechanical testing laboratory.

The Opportunity

The position would suit an applicant with a good understanding of mechanics, machinery and systems. The role is a hands-on position whereby the applicant would be required to set-up test systems and conduct the test. The skill set would suit a fitter and turner, fitter welder, metal fabricator, mechanic or an engineer with hands on experience. While the position would ideally suit a formally qualified person, applicants without qualifications who have a strong interest and experience in mechanics, structures, machinery, fabrication and building will also be considered.

In the process of doing your work, you will assist in daily laboratory operations, including sample preparation, testing, data analysis, equipment calibration, and reporting.

You will be required to collaborate closely with test engineers and technical staff to deliver high-quality outcomes for clients while supporting continuous improvement and adopting and maintaining a high standard of safety and compliance with Australian Standards.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out a variety of physical tests and calibration tasks in both laboratory and field environments, with potential for national and international travel.

Operate and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment.

Ensure test results are accurate, consistent, and clearly recorded.

Technical & Team Support

Assist engineers and senior technicians with test setups and investigations.

Contribute to method development, data collection, and result interpretation.

Participate in team meetings, planning sessions, and daily briefings.

Documentation & Quality Assurance

Record all test data in a clear, traceable, and timely manner.

Assist with documentation for compliance and audit purposes.

Follow all testing procedures in accordance with quality systems (e.g., ISO/IEC 17025).

Health, Safety & Laboratory Practices

Maintain a clean, safe, and organised workspace.

Adhere to company OHS policies and contribute to a safety-first culture.

Attend daily Toolbox Meetings and support hazard reporting and risk management initiatives.

What You’ll Bring

Experience in a laboratory or technical testing environment (advantageous but not essential).

Familiarity with calibration, instrumentation, or testing equipment (advantageous but not essential).

An understanding of lab safety and quality systems (advantageous but not essential).

Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

Effective communication and teamwork skills.

A valid driver's license and passport (for occasional site work and travel).
