About the Opportunity
This is an exciting development for Mental Health at South Western Sydney LHD to bring together a Team Leader, an Aboriginal Mental Health/Social and Emotional Wellbeing Support Worker and an Aboriginal Mental Health Worker to make a difference in the lives of Aboriginal people living with mental illness.

The team will work with multidisciplinary teams in acute mental health inpatient units and emergency departments to ensure comprehensive, culturally responsive transfer of care, referral and discharge arrangements are made with and for Aboriginal consumers and carers. This position supports consumers of our Campbelltown Hospital mental health service.

The team joins a well-established Aboriginal Mental Health Team in SWSLHD that includes Aboriginal Mental Health clinicians and Aboriginal mental health workers in various community teams. The Aboriginal Mental Health Team is part of the larger SWSLHD Aboriginal Health Service that includes a number of specific teams (ie Hospital Liaison, Chronic Care, Child and Family, Drug Health, Youth Health, Health Promotion etc.)

What You'll be Doing
The primary role of this position is to provide culturally safe, recovery orientated evidence based assessment and interventions to clients of the mental health service who identify as Aboriginal and their families.

Working within the multi-disciplinary team process, the process will also undertake mental health promotion and community liaison tasks in support of the development of culturally appropriate mental health services within the SWSLHD.

In negotiation with SWSLHD, to undertake appropriate further education to develop the necessary competencies of a Mental Health Professional.

SWSLHD Community Mental Health Services provide comprehensive, community-based mental health care across South Western Sydney.

These services cater to different age groups, including children, adolescents, adults, and older persons, ensuring specialised care throughout various life stages. The multidisciplinary teams offer a range of supports, including mental health assessments, crisis intervention, care coordination, and therapy. They work closely with inpatient services, GPs, and other community organisations to provide holistic care.

  1. This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent through parentage, identify as an Aboriginal person and/or Torres Strait Islander and be accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
  2. Willingness and ability to complete further education in Mental Health or relevant qualification e.g., Certificate IV Mental Health; Bachelor of Health Science (Mental Health) qualification at Charles Sturt University or an equivalent clinical qualification negotiated and approved by the Mental Health Service.
  3. Demonstrated understanding of evidence based practice, informed by the factors that have impacted on the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal communities.
  4. Demonstrated case management or care coordination experience delivering health or social services to Aboriginal communities.
  5. Demonstrated experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver health or social services to Aboriginal communities.
  6. Ability to undertake health/social needs assessment to inform the delivery of care and referral/liaison with other Government and non-Government service providers including Aboriginal specific services.
  7. Understanding of the NSW Mental Health Act 2007.
