Western NSW Local Health District
Posted 1 day ago
New service. New team. New approach.
You’re invited to take a lead role.
The Head to Health Kids Hub is a new community based service providing mental health and wellbeing support for children up to the age of 12 years with mild to moderate emotional, behavioural and mental health challenges, and their family. This new service is part of a nation-wide roll out of Kids Hubs jointly funded by NSW Health and the Australian Government.
Located in Orange with satellite services in Bathurst, we’ll be using flexible and creative approaches to increase the well-being and functioning of our clients, guided by a new model of care within a multidisciplinary framework.
As an Aboriginal Mental Health Care Navigator at the Head to Health Kids Hub, you’ll play a core role in initiating the delivery of high-quality clinical services.
As the first point of contact with our clients you’ll use your assessment and flexible problem-solving skills to the fore, to determine the needs of our clients, and shape our response to it. You’ll be pivotal in engaging and supporting children and families within the Head to Health Kids Hub and guiding their support with other service providers across health, education, social services, Aboriginal health, and disability sectors. You’ll help to ensure continuity of care for our clients and increase access to support options, which will make full use of your communication and advocacy skills.
You’ll take a child centred approach but will extend your scope to focus on the families and carers of our clients to contribute a truly wholistic health service in our community.
You’ll use your clinical and cultural expertise to coordinate services to prioritise the delivery of support to Aboriginal children and families and carers with mental health and well-being challenges, and to establish connections within the local community to achieve this goal.
This is a temporarily funded position until 30 June 2026 with the possibility of extension subject to funding.
Closes midnight 13/5/25
About Western NSW Local Health District
We work with local clinicians and our community to provide the best possible health care to the people of the Western NSW Local Health District.
The Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) is one of the largest Local Health Districts in New South Wales covering an area of 246,676 square kilometres, similar to the size of Britain.
We deliver innovative health services to an estimated resident population of approximately 276,000 people. WNSWLHD is diverse in the health care it delivers boasting the largest rural mental health service in Australia, three major rural referral hospitals at Orange, Dubbo and Bathurst, 50 community health centres which provide access to a wide range of multidisciplinary primary, and community health services, 38 inpatient facilities including 25 Multipurpose Services (MPSs) and District Health Services at Mudgee, Cowra, Parkes and Forbes.
There are more than 30,786 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in the Local Health District, representing 11.1% of the total population. This is significantly higher than the NSW average of 2.1%. The smaller more remote communities of Brewarrina, Walgett, Coonamble and Bourke have the highest proportion of Aboriginal people. People of a non-English speaking background, make up 2.8% of the population, compared to 15% for NSW.
Our region has some of the most vulnerable population in NSW and even Australia who generally have a lower socio-economic status, shorter life expectancy, and poorer health than other people living in NSW. More people also have at least one of the risk factors that contribute to poorer health including smoking, harmful use of alcohol, obesity and lack of physical activity.
Mental health is an important service that is provided by WNSWLHD both at a local and state-wide level. We are committed to improving our mental health services to ensure contemporary models of care are provided closer to the client's place of residence.
