About This Opportunity

The Principal Health, Safety, and Wellness (HSW) Advisor is a hands-on leader responsible for driving the implementation of the UQ Health, Safety, and Wellness Strategy 2022-2026 across the Property and Facilities Division. With a proven track record in delivering health and safety management in large-scale facility or infrastructure maintenance settings, you'll be instrumental in promoting high HSW standards and a positive safety culture.

In this role you will be an on the ground presence, joining maintenance contractors for inspections, building rapport, identifying hazards, and proactively engaging with tradespeople and contractors. You'll provide strategic HSW advice, ensure legislative compliance, and collaborate closely with the central HSW Division while having the autonomy to lead projects that enhance the health, safety, and wellness of our diverse worksites.

With no two workdays the same, we're seeking individuals who are passionate about HSW and take pride in engaging and empowering our teams, including partners, contractors, and sub-contractors.

Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and implementing innovative projects that improve workplace health, safety, and wellness, and advising on best practices aligned with legislation.
  • Undertaking inspections and participating in high-risk activities across campus to ensure safety standards are maintained.
  • Identifying risks, conducting thorough incident investigations, and reporting trends to senior management.
  • Developing and delivering HSW-related professional development, training, and compliance monitoring.
  • Providing consistent HSW guidance across the division, supporting leadership, and contributing to a strong, positive safety culture.
  • Collaborating with site teams and HSW representatives to maintain consistency in practice across locations.
  • Facilitating and participating in site-specific and divisional WHS committees and forums.

About You
  • A qualification in occupational health and safety or similar with at least four (4) years subsequent relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Experience working in a construction environment, or experience managing health and safety in relation to high-risk construction activities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the principles and legislation related to Workplace Health and Safety, Fire Safety, and Electrical Safety Acts and Regulations, and experience in applying the requirements and responsibilities in a construction, infrastructure, or facilities management setting.
  • Demonstrated skills in interpreting policies, implementing procedures, and developing local guidelines for a large, complex organisation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally with a diverse range of people both within and external to the University.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, with excellent organisational skills including the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to negotiate and influence others in a constructive, outcomes-focused manner particularly with the promotion of positive HSW culture and good laboratory practice.
  • Experience managing health and safety relating to other facets of service and/ facilities, such as traffic/ transport, maintenance, logistics/ goods handling, site security, grounds maintenance, electrical work, emergency response is desirable.

Desirable:

  • Experience managing safety across other service and facility functions, such as logistics, traffic/transport, site security, grounds, electrical, emergency response, or maintenance.
