About This Opportunity

The School of Civil Engineering and UQ Innovate offer an exciting opportunity for a person with the right skills and a passion for health, safety and wellness (HSW) to take on this HSW Coordinator position across two distinct organisational units. We are looking for someone who can help actively foster a culture of workplace health and safety, provide advice to senior managers on HSW, and implement new initiatives along with the usual compliance, reporting and planning requirements.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Chemical safety and regulations, including GHS, drugs, poisons, carcinogens, and Chemicals of Security Concern.
  • Chemical and biological packaging for transport, ergonomics, manual handling, wellness programs, sustainability-waste procedures, pressure vessels, safety in design for plant and large-scale experimental equipment, procurement, installation, and use of equipment and plant, and occupational hygiene (exposure to airborne contaminants).
  • Lead and implement innovative projects with local HSW Committees and Faculty HSW team to create operational efficiencies and improve workplace health, safety, and wellness.
  • Act as the HSW Coordinator for two organisational units, in accordance with UQ's role definition, for:
  • Advise the Head of School, School Manager, EAIT Innovation Group Manager, and relevant stakeholders on best practices and responsibilities under the Workplace Health and Safety Act, including developing Workplace Health and Safety Management Plans.
  • Provide advice on hazard identification, risk control measures, and incident investigations, and report findings to the Head of School, School Manager, and EAIT Innovation Group Manager.
  • Advise on risk assessment and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) requirements for laboratories, workshops, and research projects, ensuring compliance with UQ policy and legislative requirements.
  • Develop and deliver health, safety, and wellness professional development opportunities, manage WHS inductions for new staff and students, and ensure compliance with mandatory training requirements.
  • Attend and participate in Faculty HSW Committee, local HSW Committees, and Lab and Workshop Managers meetings.
  • Conduct annual workplace inspections and audits, regular safety walks, and ensure adequate record keeping as per UQ policies and the Act.

About You
  • A degree in occupational health and safety or similar with at least four (4) years subsequent relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Thorough understanding of the principles and legislation related to work health and safety, and a demonstrated capacity to design and implement policy or procedures with regard to legislation, Standards and Codes.
  • Knowledge of the principles, legislation, standards and codes associated with managing plant safety risks.
  • Demonstrated high level interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to influence teams in a constructive, outcomes-focused manner, and to work collaboratively with management, peers, team members and client groups in the promotion of positive HSW culture and good laboratory practice and experience in leading change.
  • Experience in the use of a wide range of computer applications in a networked environment.

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, criminal check, education check, mandatory immunisations, first aid and/or CPR certification, etc.
