About the ALC

The Anindilyakwa Land Council (ALC) represents the Traditional Owners of the Groote Archipelago. The ALC is a ‘future-forward’ Land Council, directed by the 14 clans of the Groote Archipelago region, enabling the Anindilyakwa people to take full advantage of the opportunities and technology available in the 21st century, while simultaneously preserving land, language and culture.

The vision of the ALC is to:

Protect, maintain and promote Anindilyakwa culture;

Invest in the present to build a self-sufficient future; and

Create pathways for youth to stand in both worlds.

About the role:

The Men’s Activity and Cultural Coordinator manages the daily operations of the Men’s Shed and Men’s Art Program, unique programs of the ALC, and supports the skills development for users of the programs. The Men’s Shed offers Anindilyakwa men a space to connect and participate in hands on activities, such as timber work and ceremonial paint making. Additionally providing a place for community participation and the sharing of cultural knowledge and skills. The Men’s Art Program provides support for men to collect material for and develop their art works and a space where men can work on their art and guide emerging artists.

Key Responsibilities:

Work collaboratively to further develop and refine long term program objectives

Develop and maintain work plans to achieve program objectives

Create a supportive team environment, encouraging employee participation and high work attendance

Coach and mentor employees towards skills improvement and self-direction

Establish strong and effective working relationships with the community to increase participation in Men’s Shed and Art programs.

Undertake all employee leadership tasks

Undertake all administrative and reporting tasks related to the program

About You:

Qualifications or equivalent workplace experience in a woodwork related industry and/or indigenous art program development

Demonstrated minimum 2 years’ experience supervising, training or mentoring Traditional Owners

A proven ability to work collaboratively, build and maintain strong and effective relationships within a remote indigenous community

Proficiency in using computer software

Current manual driver licence

Current working with children clearance or willing to obtain
