About the role

Join our talented team of developers at Curtin University as a proactive and experienced Practice Lead – Development within our Department of Technology Services (DTS). In this ongoing permanent full-time (1.0 FTE) role, you will guide a team responsible for designing, coding, testing, and documenting complex products and enhancements, ensuring our solutions align with business needs and stakeholder expectations.

As a key leader in our organisation, you will oversee the software development lifecycle (SDLC), driving the adoption of best practices, tools, and methodologies that elevate our development processes.

Your responsibilities will include, but at not limited to:

Management Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and mentorship to staff, ensuring adherence to the Software Delivery Framework and supporting personal and team development.
  • Collaborate with IT managers to align resources and capabilities, while leading IT service capacity planning to meet delivery needs.
  • Foster strong relationships across IT to enhance collaboration and represent Digital & Technology Solutions in university committees.

Functional Responsibilities:

  • Lead improvements in systems and software life cycle practices, monitor industry trends to innovate practices, and promote knowledge sharing among developers.
  • Focus on reducing legacy technology debt and ensure project alignment with development frameworks.

Who we are looking for - Selection Criteria

  1. Extensive experience and relevant qualifications in the ICT field, particularly in software development and line management, with a focus on coaching and capability development.
  2. Strong understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle, especially within agile environments, along with a proven ability to manage and uplift software development teams to achieve desired outcomes.
  3. Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with the capacity to assess and address strategic technology issues impacting organizational operations.
  4. Effective communication and negotiation skills, enabling collaboration with multiple stakeholders, complemented by a commitment to continuous improvement and implementing meaningful change.
  5. Strong experience utilising AWS services to design and implement scalable and secure cloud solutions.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in and/or a broad understanding of challenges relating to working within a higher education environment.

* Please note that this is a full-time position located at our Bentley Campus in Perth, Western Australia. Remote work options will not be considered.

Role Requirements:

  • As this is a continuing (permanent) role, you will require permanent work rights in Australia to be considered.
