Purpose of specific work area and position

The Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) Training and Development unit comprising of operational and non-operational staff within four teams – staff development, volunteer training development, volunteer training delivery, and resource development. The unit oversees the coordinated response to volunteer training and staff development.

Reporting to the Manager, you will be a key member of the team responsible for assisting to maintain a high level of competency-based training for staff and volunteers. This includes development of flexible training resources for field-based trainers ensuring Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and the departments audit requirements are met. The role provides expert advice and support to key stakeholders in the development of staff development and volunteer training activities and works closely with District, and regional stakeholders in the Operational Training and Training and Development teams.

Mandatory requirements

Must meet the mandatory requirements and attributes as outlined in the generic RFSQ Rural Officer Two (RFSO2) role description.

Possession of current Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and/or accredited tertiary qualification in adult education or equivalent.

Highly desirable requirements

Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and provide good organisational and planning skills.

Primary duties

In addition to the generic RFSO2 role description, the purpose of the Training Resource Officer includes but is not limited to:

As an experienced fire practitioner, research, develop and apply best practice training processes relevant to delivery to ensure the staff and volunteer curriculum is contemporary and aligned with operational currency.

Engage with the departments’ RTO to implement and maintain the recognition of prior learning process for the alignment of skills to national competencies for staff and volunteers.

Develop, deliver, and evaluate, training courses and associated leadership requirements in accordance with departmental systems and volunteer learning development frameworks.

Provide technical support to regional training stakeholders, including staff and volunteers, in the use of the organisational learning management system.

Support the development and publishing of innovative training manuals, flexible learning options and resources to be used by staff and volunteer trainers.

Provide advice to regional training personnel to ensure training is delivered in the most effective method within the policy and procedural requirements of the RTO.

Liaise with, support and mentor area staff and volunteers to ensure volunteer training delivery is of the highest quality and monitor, audit, and report on programs, to ensure resources are fit-for-purpose and compliant with industry standards.

Rural Officer One (RFSO1) or applicants with equivalent industry experience, appropriate skills, and knowledge, are encouraged to apply.

Incumbent’s may be required to travel and work within their area of responsibility and may also be required to undertake intrastate, interstate deployment and travel.

This is a day work position with flexible hours of work to meet functional demands, including working at night or weekends as part of the role.

Incumbents appointed to this position will participate in a personal professional development programme developed in conjunction with their supervisor.

Have proven commitment to maintaining competencies and operating in a team environment and will actively participate in an ‘On-Call’ roster system as required.
