We are continuing to grow our team within Family Law Services. We are looking to support those with a strong knowledge of the family law sector who are interested in developing into the FDRP role and would like support to complete their studies.

About the Role

As a Family Law Counsellor/ FDRP Trainee you would have the opportunity to work across two teams while receiving on the job training working with families impacted by separation.

The Family Law Counsellor role provides assessment, therapeutic work and case management to children, adolescents, individuals, couples, and families impacted by family separation. This is a designated “family counsellor” role under the Family Law Act and will support parents to remain child focused and to maintain safe relationships in the best interests of children.

The FDRP trainee, pending accreditation, provides support to separated families requesting family dispute resolution. When trained, the FDRP role assists separated families who need parenting arrangements and/or financial and property settlement, working in a collaborative model which includes child inclusive practice. Some of your responsibilities will be:

  • Delivering clinical and support services by using a range of therapeutic practise models, including child inclusive practice, psychoeducational group facilitation with children or parents, individual, couple or family counselling and post separation case management
  • Provide thorough ongoing risk assessments, determine the suitability of cases for FDR.
  • Working collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team including family dispute resolution practitioners
  • Working in accordance with relevant professional practice standards and maintaining professional currency in family law counselling, therapeutic training, and case management
  • Maintaining a focus on the safety and wellbeing of clients and their families, underpinned by a thorough understanding of child development, child protection, and individual and systemic issues including Domestic and Family Violence
  • Maintaining a thorough and up to date understanding of the relevant provisions of the Family Law Act (1975), the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act (1998) and other relevant legislation as it applies to Family Counsellors and operating with cognisance of the legislative provisions

About You

To be a successful candidate you will have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in social work, psychology or counselling, and eligibility for membership with a relevant professional Board or Association and a minimum of 3 years’ experience in the family law sector or relevant profession.
  • Willing and motivated to complete a Graduate Diploma of Family Dispute Resolution Practice
  • Experience in working with adults and children impacted by relationship breakdown, family separation and family law processes, to meet the requirements for designated family counsellors under the Family Law Act
  • Demonstrated experience in providing therapeutic interventions and case management within a trauma- informed practice model, assessing and responding to the impact of issues including separation, domestic and family violence, mental health, alcohol and other drugs, grief and loss, and child protection
  • Thorough knowledge of child development, Child Protection Legislation and the Family Law Act
  • Ability to engage with and support children and young people
  • High level of verbal and written communication skills, and competence in using client management systems and phone/online modes of service delivery
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in working with Cultural and Linguistically Diverse Communities and with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities
  • Ability to appraise and critically reflect on clinical work and participation in clinical supervision
  • Desirable: demonstrated experience in psycho-educational group facilitation
