We're hiring a Culture Care Connect Aftercare Worker to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in East Arnhem. This vital role delivers culturally safe suicide prevention and aftercare services, offering intensive, long-term support to individuals and their support networks. You’ll lead therapeutic programs, build strong community partnerships, co-design services with local input, and provide guidance to the Yolngu workforce. About Miwatj
Miwatj Health is an independent Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Service. Established in 1992, we’re committed to securing quality health care services across the East Arnhem and enabling YolÅ‹u powered community health and wellbeing. Miwatj provides culturally appropriate, comprehensive primary health care to over 6,000 remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents across 3 East Arnhem wards. With a Head Office in Nhulunbuy, Miwatj also manages a Corporate Office in Darwin, 7 fixed clinics across the East Arnhem region, and dedicated outreach teams who travel to 3 additional locations.
Essential Requirements
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced individual with a strong understanding and commitment to Aboriginal Community Control and self-determination, particularly in relation to the challenges faced by Yolngu people in remote communities. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years’ experience in the SEWB or community services sector, along with a Diploma in Community Services or equivalent relevant experience. You will be skilled in delivering trauma-informed, person-centred, and strength-based support, including brief interventions and client advocacy. Strong communication, problem-solving, and time management skills are essential, as is the ability to work independently and facilitate community-based programs focused on mental health, suicide prevention, and capacity building. This role requires regular travel to remote communities by light aircraft (up to five days at a time), and a current NT Ochre Card (Working with Children’s Check) is mandatory.

Miwatj Health has its administrative base in the town of Nhulunbuy, in the Northern Territory of Australia. Our clinics are located in Nhulunbuy, Gunyangara (also known as Marngarr), Galiwin’ku and Yirrkala, providing a walk-in service for all acute and preventive care needs. The Core Functions of Miwatj Health are:

◾The provision of clinical services to Aboriginal communities in the East Arnhem Land region, including both acute care and longer-term preventive care

◾Implementation of a range of population/public health programs and strategies which address the underlying causes of illness

◾Advocacy in support of the right of Aboriginal people to control their own health services and for such health services to receive resources and funding adequate to address the health problems of the region

◾Ensuring efficient, accountable administrative and financial systems support for the delivery of our services. The underlying philosophy of Miwatj Health is the fundamental right of Aboriginal people to control their own health services.
