The Technical Assistant will provide technical support to the field, laboratory and glasshouse activities of the field crops pathology research program at Horsham. The field crop pathology team is a leading provider of disease management solutions for the Australian grains industry and works with national collaborators.
The technical assistant duties will include the preparation of field and glasshouse experiments, field sampling of soil and plants, and data recording. The role will support both the field team and laboratory team.
The Technical Assistant should be a good team member with the capacity to demonstrate good time management and organisational skills. They will be required to maintain accurate electronic records and follow standard operating procedures while working in a safe manner. Applicants should enjoy a mix of work which includes laboratory, glasshouse, field and office work.
Projects within the pathology program are supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA).
Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications
- Education to year 12 with passes in four subjects including English and one science subject, plus formal training or equivalent and/or relevant experience.
- A Victorian driver's license is required.
- An understanding of grain production in Australia.
- Ability to efficiently and accurately pack seed for trials and process plant/soil/grain samples following established procedures.
- Proven ability to accurately and efficiently collate and manage experimental data using computers.
- The ability to use and maintain a range of laboratory equipment and grow plant diseases in the laboratory.
- Ability to safely work independently, sometimes in remote areas, undertaking sample collection and field assessments.
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a project team, be responsible for areas of work, communicate effectively with others, show initiative and demonstrate organisational skills.
This is a fixed term position available for a period of 12 months. The work location for this position is Horsham, Victoria.
