About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for a part time Technical Assistant to join the Central Operational Services (COS) Science Delivery Team.

This Technical Assistant supports the delivery of timely and effective teaching support in agriculture, soils and food area to achieve enhanced education facilities support and excellent outcomes. The role's key activities include maintaining the technical facilities and teaching laboratories in a clean and tidy state, operating equipment, disposing of technical waste, maintaining stock levels of supplies, and administrative tasks such as performing inventory stock takes, labelling, record-keeping, receiving and unpacking goods, etc.

This Technical Assistant also support Technical Officers with setting up of classes/demonstrations/research, maintaining and calibrating equipment, preparing reagents and consumables, writing safety/procedural documentation, and conducting investigative tasks under guidance.

This role will be primarily located in Australian Technology Park but may be required to assist in other locations as needed.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • deliver effective and timely technical services in responsibility area in line with established protocols/procedures under the general supervision of senior technical staff
  • transport and handle bulky and heavy items such as gas cylinders, heavy equipment, containers, samples used for teaching
  • prepare test samples/scenarios, consumables, materials, components, technical equipment, and facilities, as required for practical classes in laboratory and field environments
  • provide technical and administrative support the responsibility area under the general supervision of senior technical staff
  • participate in meetings, including workshops and activities, as required to support the development and implementation of service improvement initiatives
  • provide site inductions and escort for external parties, including visitors and service technicians
  • maintain inventory databases and regularly perform stocktaking for equipment, consumables, hazardous materials, samples/specimens
  • monitor and advise users on correct adherence to general WHS/compliance procedures, escalate concerns to senior staff for resolution.

About you

  • a diploma or advanced diploma (Vocational Education) in environmental/agricultural sciences and/or combination of relevant training and experience
  • the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work
  • excellent communication skills, including the ability to contribute to the develop and maintenance and review of standard technical documentation and operating procedure
  • experience in set up/pack down of higher educational laboratory classes in the either of the following areas: agriculture, soils, food, plant pathology and crop protection
  • demonstrated experience or training working in accordance with safety regulations and operating procedures within a technical environment
  • technical training and/or experience working in routine laboratory and field environments, including experience in working with hazardous substances and/or technical equipment.
