The Opportunity
This opportunity is a pivotal leadership role in the Policy Department, which comprises three teams. As Manager of the Medical Practice Team, you’ll be responsible for a diverse portfolio covering public hospital funding, private health insurance, eHealth, the regulation of medical practice and scopes of practice.
You’ll provide strategic direction to four direct reports and maintain high levels of team cohesion, motivation and morale in a demanding environment. A critical aspect of your role will be providing secretariat support to two Advisory Committees: the Medical Practice Committee and the Council of Private Practice comprising practicing Doctor members.

- Partner with senior leadership, including AMA’s President and Vice President, on key policy and advocacy initiatives and change reforms
The Role
As a leader in the organisation, you’ll have a broad remit across the following key responsibilities:
- Provide high level strategic advice and briefings to the AMA President, Vice President, CEO and Federal Council
- Lead the development and delivery of effective policy and advocacy outcomes in the Medical Practice portfolio
- Oversee the running of two Advisory Committees
- Participate in AMA’s Council and Committee meetings on policy and advocacy initiatives
- Represent the AMA on external committees, forums and panels to inform continued work in the public health field
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with Members of Parliament and their advisers, peak health bodies, government agencies and health experts to inform and strengthen the work of the AMA
The Ideal Person
This is a leadership position suited to an individual who is seasoned policy manager with experience in leading the development of policy and/or advocacy initiatives. You may be coming from another industry association, a peak body or government. It’s not essential that you have a health background, however you’ll need to be driven to learn about the complexities, sensitives and nuances of the health sector.
Key competencies of the ideal person include:
- Experience in applying diplomacy when managing a range of complex stakeholders and navigating political structures
- Experience engaging with key people of influence in government, media and industry experts
- Experience leading, motivating and setting the strategic direction for a team with diverse needs and backgrounds in a demanding environment
- A track record of good tenure in previous roles demonstrating an ability to build trust over time within industry
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with experience preparing executive briefings, publications, media statements, talking points and speeches
- A relevant tertiary qualification in economics, law, business, public policy, commerce or a related field
Remuneration and Benefits
- $165k - $175k + 11.5% Super
- Full-time permanent position
