Writer and Editor
Location: Remote
Position Type: Contract: 12-18 months with the possibility to extend.
About the Role:
We are looking for a writer and editor to join our small team to produce our specialist monthly magazines. We cover all the latest news, including business, industry updates, infrastructure and rolling stock, rail preservation, features, historical articles, rail operators and operations and enthusiast news. For years, we’ve captured the curiosity and interest of professionals, businesses, industry figures, hobbyists, and historians—and we’re looking to grow our dedicated team.
We’re on the exciting hunt for a new writer and editor. You’ll be responsible for overseeing the production, editorial direction, and content strategy and to lay the groundwork for future digital publication.
This specialised role involves planning feature articles, maintaining the magazine’s high editorial standards, managing contributions from writers and photographers, and ensuring publications continue to meet our high standards of quality and accuracy.
As printed media declines, the right candidate will also be in tune with technological trends including AI, digital publication, web design and social media. We expect there will be a shift to online publication within the next 2-5 years and this role will be expected to drive that change.
Key Responsibilities:
Content Management
● Research, generate ideas, develop, curate, and oversee engaging and informative content. This will cover a broad spectrum of topics, including railway industry news, preservation efforts, and enthusiast activities.
● Write editorials, feature articles, and news pieces.
● Commission articles, reports, and features from freelance writers, photographers, and industry experts.
● Ensure all content is accurate, well-researched, and aligned with the magazine’s quality standards, editorial vision and reader expectations.
Editorial Oversight
● Manage the end-to-end editorial process, from content planning and creation to proofreading and final approval.
● Ensure consistency of brand style, tone, and quality across all content.
● Fact-check content and uphold journalistic standards of accuracy and impartiality.
Collaboration and Teamwork
● Work closely with internal teams, including bookshop and archives staff, to align with other commercial activities and to ensure the timely production and publication of each issue.
● Collaborate with industry partners, preservation societies, and enthusiasts to source relevant news, interviews and insights.
● Maintain strong relationships with contributors and actively seek out new voices and perspectives for the magazine.
Publication Management:
● Lead the production schedule to ensure the magazine is published on time every month with a smooth delivery.
● Review and revise the layout and design process to ensure content is visually engaging and reader-friendly.
● Search for and identify advertising opportunities, secure deals, and oversee the process from negotiation to execution.
Reader Engagement:
● Engage with the readership to gather feedback, address inquiries, and foster community
● Attend industry events, preservation activities, and enthusiast gatherings to represent the Society and build industry knowledge.
● Look for opportunities to grow readership, distribution, partnerships and advertising revenue.
Key Attributes and Skills:
● Tertiary qualifications in arts, media, journalism or graphic design desirable.
● Proven senior-level experience in a similar role, ideally within a transport, industry, engineering, government or not-for-profit environment.
● Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills with close attention to detail.
● Must be able to assess and accurately revise your own work.
● Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects.
● Highly organised and self-motivated, able to meet tight deadlines.
● Clear communication skills with a collaborative and accommodating attitude.
● Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite (at least InDesign, Photoshop and/or Illustrator) is essential
● Strong understanding of Australia's railway industry and a general interest in railways, preservation, and the business community is desirable.
● Open to learning new skills when needed.
● An interest in creating and further developing an online issue of the magazine and its components in the future.
● Be willing to travel to attend industry railway events in Australia and overseas.
Benefits:
● Opportunity to lead a highly respected publication in the railway industry and enthusiast community.
● Engage with a wide network of professionals, business executives and railway enthusiasts.
● Be part of a supportive and dynamic team that is passionate about preserving Australia's rich railway heritage and growing new groups of devotees.
● Salary package of $6000-$6500 per month.
