About the role
As Assistant General Counsel, you will be part of the close knit leadership team. You will have a real say in the decisions impacting the team, and actively coach and mentor junior lawyers. Assistant General Counsel leads the provision of legal advice and representation in the highest profile and most sensitive matters. It can involve leading a multi-disciplinary team of lawyers, paralegals and experts working on larger matters with senior counsel.
Legal matters include administrative law proceedings, regulatory investigations and prosecutions and statutory interpretation with a focus on the Work Health and Safety Act 2020.
The work includes providing legal opinions on prosecution briefs, publications, media releases, policy and legislative development and much more.
You will have the opportunity to appear as lead counsel and junior counsel and conduct your matters with real autonomy whilst supported by a team of lawyers who are leaders in safety and health law. Our clients work across all industries, and they are experts in their fields. You will work across mining and petroleum, transport, construction, manufacturing, dangerous goods, primary industries and collaborate with clients who are technical experts such as scientists, psychologists, engineers and people with a wide range of industry experience.
Essential requirements for this role:
Admitted as a lawyer by the Supreme Court of Western Australia and hold a current Australian Practicing Certificate.
Significant post admission experience conducting large and complex matters with a high degree of autonomy in the areas of litigation, criminal law, regulatory enforcement, government, or another area of law relevant to the role.
Experience analysing complex legal problems and providing detailed legal advice that is well written, accurate and solution focused.
Experience appearing in court in relation to contested matters.
Strong management and leadership skills including the ability to lead others and identify opportunities for business process improvement.
Highly effective communication skills including the ability to build rapport, influence and gain the consensus of a range of people.
Adept at managing competing priorities and client demands.
