Position Context
Dandenong & District Aborigines Corporative Ltd are currently seeking an Indigenous Health Project Officer, 15.2 hours per week on a 3 month fixed term contract. The Indigenous Health Project Officer (IHPO) role provides holistic, primary health care services that help local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make better use of available health care services.
About The Role:
The Indigenous Health Project Officer (IHPO) provides leadership on Indigenous health issues. They work as team leaders within the region and help develop and implement a coordinated team based approach aimed at increasing awareness of services whilst maximizing links between services for ATSI community members. They are accountable for the achievement of agreed targets and indicators for the programs.
Key Selection Criteria:
Essential Qualifications:
· Relevant certificate, or equivalent experience, in an Aboriginal Health Service management role and an understanding of the social determinants of health in Aboriginal societies.
Essential Criteria:
Ability to communicate effectively with Koori people and to handle cultural issues in a sensitive manner.
Ability to work co-operatively and effectively as part of a discreet health team and maintain a high level of professionalism and cultural sensitivity when dealing with other staff.
Program and / or project management experience, including planning, implementation and evaluation, within government or a government funded health industry organisation
Extensive knowledge of the Closing the Gap program, the CCSS/ITC program and previous work in an Indigenous Health Program Officer role
Knowledge and understanding of the primary health service system, in particular general practice and the MBS with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Indigenous specific MBS Item numbers.
An ability to establish and maintain a Regional relationship with key stakeholders within the SEMPHN region
Familiarity with general practice medical software systems and MMEX.
Proven experience in stakeholder engagement, especially in the Allied Health fields. Proven ability to engage, negotiate and influence in order to achieve outcomes
Developed interpersonal, negotiation, and written and oral communication and presentation skills and excellent conceptual and problem-solving skills/ abilities
Ability to work 'out and about' in an autonomous and mobile manner across the broad region
Ability to respond quickly, flexibly and effectively to emerging issues and trends
Excellent prioritisation, planning and organisational skills demonstrated by establishing courses of action for self and others to ensure work is completed efficiently
Possess (minimum) intermediate computer skills especially in the use of the Microsoft Office suite.
OTHER DESIRABLE SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
• Previous experience in a health worker or similar role in a health care setting.
• Strong knowledge and understanding of the social determinants of health and the meaning of culturally safe service provision
· Knowledge of Medicare billing system, Patient Information Systems, such as Best Practice, Medical Director etc.
Other Relevant Criteria:
1. Completion of a satisfactory background and police check.
2. Possession of or a preparedness to obtain a “Working with Children Check” card.
3. A current unrestricted Victorian Driver’s licence.
