Job location

Forensicare provides specialist forensic mental health services across 12 of Victoria’s 14 prisons with expansion underway to include Western Plains in the Barwon region. This position based at Ravenhall Correctional Centre in Melbourne's west, provides 75 prison-based custodial mental health beds as well as assessments and outpatient services provided in maximum-security forensic mental health complex within the medium-security prison.

About the Role:

The Psychologist works on a unit within Ballerrt Yeram-boo-ee with prisoners experiencing mental illness as a member of the multidisciplinary team. They may be involved in scholarly writing and research. The Psychologist will complete court ordered psychological assessments as directed.

Duties:

  • Provides a full range of psychological services and advice on the management and treatment of patients.
  • Provides specialist psychological, psychometric and psychodiagnostic assessments and reports where necessary.
  • Provides individual and/or group interventions as appropriate.
  • Contributes to patient risk assessment and risk management in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Provides discipline-specific contributions to clinical practice and to program development.

About You:

  • Previous working experience in a mental health facility, or a forensic mental health service would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge in clinical forensic psychology including forensic assessments (i.e., court ordered assessments, assessment of risk for violence) and intervention with offenders and/or forensic patients.
  • Knowledge and experience working with offenders, including those with personality disorders.
  • A good understanding of the current psychological approaches in working with male patients experiencing mental illness in the forensic mental health setting.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, the mental health system, and the criminal justice system.

What you need:

  • Masters or Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited course or equivalent, or a Doctorate degree in Forensic Psychology from an APAC accredited course or equivalent.
  • Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulations Agency (AHPRA).
  • The successful candidate will be required to register their qualifications on eCredential.

Forensicare is the only agency in Victoria that provides clinical forensic mental health services which span all components of the mental health and criminal justice sectors – giving Forensicare a unique perspective on mental health and public safety issues. It is able to provide specialist forensic mental health services tailored to meet the specific needs of both sectors.

We provide forensic mental health services for people:

with a serious mental illness in the criminal justice system

at risk of offending who pose a risk to themselves or others

referred from the general mental health system for specialist advice, support and/or treatment.
