About the role
The Community Work Officer (CWO) role includes working with young people who have offended to ensure they can satisfy the requirements of their community work obligations issued by sentencing authorities, according to legislation and Departmental policy.
Community work is an important aspect of rehabilitation and provided young people who offend with the opportunity to pay-back the community through the work undertaken. Developing and improving work-related skills, retaining a sense of dignity by increasing their self-esteem and well-being, by giving their lives new purpose and direction.
Community work programs vary widely and can range from outdoor work programs such as graffiti removal, parks and garden maintenance, to indoor programs such as art creation. Where possible, young people are placed in programs that benefit both the community and the young person.
The role also involves building community partnerships with a wide variety of government and non-government organisations to develop and manage suitable community work programs for young people. The CWO works as part of the Central Metropolitan and Central Wheatbelt Youth Justice team on a day-to-day basis and the work can involve weekend community work projects.
