About us
The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) provides fire prevention, preparedness and response services to fire in the built and landscape environments, as well as scientific and specialist capabilities to Queensland communities. The QFD provides a multi-hazard emergency response, including road crash rescue, bushfire, hazardous material, technical and vertical rescue, severe weather incidents, remote and swiftwater rescue, and provides a number of functions supporting community safety outcomes.
The department encompasses Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR), Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ), as well as the broader department which work together to pre-empt, prevent, mitigate and manage the consequences of fires and other emergencies on Queensland communities and support our large volunteer membership across the state.

Purpose of role
The QFD Information and Technology Directorate support the department’s operations and organisational capability by facilitating, developing and managing technological solutions and initiatives. As part of delivering quality services our vision is to make Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) simplified, smarter, connected and user-friendly. Our teams are responsible for ICT investments, governance, portfolio, projects and assurance activities, including the implementation of transformation programs through IT planning and advice, and provisioning of reliable, secure and fit-for-purpose IT solutions that achieve optimal outcomes and enable operational front line and corporate services to deliver on their capabilities and organisational objectives.
As the Principal Solution Architect [ICT Projects], you will be responsible for the delivery of designated Solution Architecture activities across our ICT Platforms, inclusive of ERP, CRM, Enterprise Asset Solutions, Digital and Online platforms and solution architecture activities across our data and information management systems. You will create key architectural artefacts and deliverables for managing the departments portfolio of "to be" and "as is" solutions — including line of business systems, enterprise services and components to enable and drive targeted business outcomes.
Key requirements
Highly desirable requirements
Previous experience as a Solution Architect in large and complex enterprise environments or experience in at least two IT solution development disciplines, including technical architecture, application development and security. Preferable with experience across Enterprise Business Systems.
Exposure to multiple, diverse technologies, platforms, and processing environments and/or system analysis activities on complex Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) products.
Awareness of ICT framework or similar process methodologies and/or qualification in Information Technology or Computer Science.
Certification in The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) or similar industry recognised certification.
Knowledge and/or experience in both waterfall, agile and/or PRINCE 2 project methodologies.
Your key accountabilities
Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting key frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:
Translating business strategy and enterprise direction into solution architecture through understanding business drivers and capabilities (current and future state), and determine technical, and systems analysis of enterprise design artefacts and solutions that impact on service delivery and operational capability.
Provide advice to key stakeholders relating to the effectiveness of the technical solutions, products and services to ensure successful implementation of key initiatives and support decision making processes.
Develop and maintain architectural ‘blueprints’ of design and analysis for Enterprise IT through business and technical requirement review and ensuring alignment with the overall IT strategy and architecture principles
Analyse, evaluate and review conceptual architecture design across applications and technologies, addressing issues, and ensuring systems are developed in line with business strategy, capabilities, value-streams and enterprise standards.
Develop and incorporate design artefacts that can be used to assess applications across government to support prioritisation, inform funding request processes and provide a consistent basis for comparing different systems and services.
Build and maintain effective networks and liaisons, between internal teams, projects and other internal and external stakeholders to assist and collaborate in the development of enterprise architecture.
Undertake projects and represent the department at working groups and forums to ensure outcomes are delivered and monitored for continuous improvement to achieve shared community safety objectives.
