Our client is a leading organization within the transport industry, currently recruiting for a Safety Manager to join their team in Sydney. This critical leadership role will focus on embedding a proactive safety culture and ensuring the safety of 3,500 employees across 12 depots. The position reports directly to the Managing Director with a dotted line to the General Manager of HSE.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Coaching: Work closely with operational leaders to develop and embed a safety-first culture, shifting the accountability for safety from safety teams to operational leadership.
  • Proactive Risk Management: Lead efforts to prevent incidents by enhancing safety systems, improving data accuracy, and ensuring audit readiness.
  • Incident Management & ICAM Investigation: Oversee incident investigations, ensuring they are conducted in compliance with legal and media requirements. A key focus will be on ICAM (Incident Cause Analysis Method) investigations to identify root causes and prevent recurrence.
  • ISO Accreditation Compliance: Ensure safety systems comply with ISO 18001 and AS 4801 standards, maintaining ISO accreditation and driving continual improvement across all sites.
  • Change Management: Lead the safety cultural shift following business acquisitions, recognizing and addressing the different safety cultures at each depot.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build relationships with key stakeholders to ensure alignment with safety practices and drive behavior change.
  • Industry Best Practices: Introduce safety benchmarks and practices from high-risk industries such as transport, logistics, oil & gas, manufacturing, and mining to enhance internal safety standards.

Key Skills & Experience:

  • Operational Safety Leadership: Proven experience in safety management in high-risk industries such as transport, logistics, manufacturing, oil & gas, mining, or construction.
  • ICAM Investigation: In-depth experience in conducting ICAM investigations and identifying root causes of incidents to improve safety outcomes.
  • ISO Accreditation: Strong understanding of ISO 18001, AS 4801, and other relevant safety standards, with experience maintaining and improving ISO accreditation.
  • Heavy Vehicle Experience: Experience in managing safety practices related to heavy vehicle operations, including compliance with road safety regulations and driver safety.
  • Behavioral Safety: Ability to implement behavioral safety strategies and drive accountability across operational leadership.
  • Multi-Site Experience: Experience managing safety programs across multiple depots or sites with diverse cultures and operational environments.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Strong communication skills to influence and gain buy-in from senior leadership and key stakeholders across the business.
  • Degree or equivalent in Health & Safety (preferred).
  • Extensive industry experience may substitute formal qualifications.
