The Role

You will be part of a highly skilled team of Software Engineers responsible for the diverse set of platforms that support mission-critical services for our managed customers. We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer with a strong background in building and maintaining software solutions for the telecommunications industry—particularly in an Optus wholesale environment. The successful candidate will be a full-stack engineer with hands-on expertise in JavaScript, PHP, Java, n8n, and SQL. You will play a pivotal role in the design, development, and optimisation of platforms that support telco and subscription-based products, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality, scalable solutions.

Your Responsibilities

Full-Stack Development

Design, develop, and maintain end-to-end solutions for telco subscription-based products using JavaScript (front-end), PHP, Java, and SQL.

Implement APIs, integrations, and workflows using n8n and other relevant tools, ensuring they adhere to industry standards and best practices.

Collaborate with designers to create intuitive user interfaces and seamless user experiences.

Telecommunications & Optus Integration

Leverage in-depth knowledge of Optus wholesale services and APIs to develop robust, scalable, and secure integrations.

Work with telecommunication protocols and platforms to enable advanced features, billing, provisioning, and customer account management.

Troubleshoot and resolve any telco-specific issues, working closely with technical support teams and external vendors (including Optus) when necessary.

Platform Architecture & Optimisation

Contribute to the architecture and design of scalable, reliable, and efficient software solutions.

Identify performance bottlenecks and propose optimisations, ensuring high availability and minimal downtime.

Evaluate new technologies and tools (e.g., frameworks, databases, cloud services) to enhance the platform’s capabilities.

Testing & Quality Assurance

Implement automated testing strategies (unit, integration, end-to-end) to maintain high software quality.

Collaborate with QA and testing teams to ensure all features and functionalities meet specification and are thoroughly verified before deployment.

Participate in code reviews, offering constructive feedback and maintaining coding standards.

Collaboration & Leadership

Mentor and guide junior and mid-level engineers, promoting best practices and knowledge sharing.

Work closely with product managers, business analysts, and other stakeholders to translate requirements into technical deliverables.

Coordinate with DevOps and infrastructure teams to streamline deployments, manage CI/CD pipelines, and maintain system security.

Continuous Improvement & Innovation

Drive continuous improvement initiatives by staying up to date with emerging technologies, methodologies, and industry trends—particularly in the telco sector.

Champion clean coding practices, adherence to coding standards, and the adoption of new techniques or tools when beneficial.

Maintain comprehensive documentation, ensuring new features, updates, and processes are well documented for future reference.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. Equivalent work experience may be considered.

Technical Expertise:

Languages: Proficiency in JavaScript, PHP, Java, and SQL.

Frameworks & Tools: Familiarity with n8n (or similar workflow automation platforms) and modern front-end frameworks (React, Vue.js, or Angular).

Database: Strong experience with relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) and performance optimisation.

Architecture: Understanding of microservices, RESTful APIs, and best practices for scalable software design.

Telecommunications Knowledge:

Demonstrated experience building and supporting telco subscription-based platforms (e.g., provisioning, billing, integrations).

Working knowledge of Optus wholesale APIs, services, and protocols is highly desirable.

DevOps & CI/CD: Experience with containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes), CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI, or similar), and version control (Git).

Problem-Solving & Analytical Skills: Proven track record of diagnosing and resolving complex software issues, particularly in telco-centric solutions.

Communication & Collaboration: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to collaborate effectively across diverse teams.

Australian Work Rights: Must have the legal right to work in Australia and be open to background checks if required.

Desirable attributes:

Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).

Familiarity with subscription management systems, payment gateways, and relevant microservices patterns.

Strong focus on performance optimisation and scalability, particularly in high-traffic environments.

Previous experience leading or mentoring teams, with a proven ability to coach and guide.
