About the role
The QA Automation Lead is a key technical leadership position within our newly formed Quality Engineering team, sitting under the Software Engineering & DevEx practice. This team will be critical in elevating product quality across our web and mobile applications by providing specialised expertise, shared resources, and testing infrastructure.

This role offers the opportunity to shape the future of quality assurance at Service NSW. You will drive the development and execution of cutting-edge testing strategies, collaborate with tens of product teams, and ensure our digital products deliver exceptional performance and user experiences to millions of NSW citizens.

Reporting to the QA Engineering Manager, you will mentor a talented team of QA Engineers and work alongside product teams to build a robust testing infrastructure that supports our mission of customer-centric innovation.

Key responsibilities include

  • Define and implement the performance and automation testing strategy to establish and meet Service NSW's quality and reliability standards.

  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance of testing frameworks, ensuring they are scalable, efficient, and integrated into CI/CD pipelines.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to a team of QA Engineers, promoting a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate with product teams to embed testing practices into development lifecycles, identify risks, and resolve defects or performance issues.

  • Deliver actionable insights from performance analysis or automated testing to enhance product quality and user satisfaction.

  • Facilitate knowledge transfer to product teams, empowering them with QA expertise and best practices.

  • Stay ahead of industry trends, adopting innovative tools and methodologies to keep our testing capabilities at the forefront.

Your skills and experience
We're looking for a proactive, collaborative leader with a proven track record in quality engineering. To succeed in this role, you will bring:

  • Extensive experience in test automation and/or performance testing within Agile or DevOps environments.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams, delivering impactful testing solutions for web and mobile applications.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, with a knack for identifying and resolving complex quality or performance challenges.

  • Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging both technical and non-technical stakeholders to drive quality outcomes.

  • A customer-focused mindset, committed to delivering digital products that enhance the lives of NSW citizens and businesses.

  • Experience mentoring and developing team members, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team culture.

  • A passion for innovation and a proactive approach to adopting new technologies and methodologies.

Your technical skills
To excel as our QA Automation Lead, you should have expertise in the following areas:

  • Test Automation Tools:

  • Proficiency with tools such as Selenium, Appium, Cypress, or similar for automated testing of web and mobile applications.

  • Performance Testing Tools: Hands-on experience with JMeter, LoadRunner, Gatling, or equivalent for performance and reliability testing

  • Framework Development: Proven ability to design and maintain scalable testing frameworks, integrating them into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitLab CI).

  • Programming Languages: Strong coding skills in languages like Python, Java, JavaScript, or C# for test script development.

  • API testing: Hands-on experience with API testing and tools (e.g., Postman, SoapUI).

  • Testing Practices: Deep knowledge of quality engineering principles, including test case design, defect management, and risk-based testing.

  • Cloud & Infrastructure: Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS) and containerisation tools (e.g., Docker, K8s) for modern testing environments.

  • Accessibility & Security: Understanding of accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG) and security testing basics is a plus.

Support office roles will be headquartered across McKell, Parramatta and Gosford. We will consider role headquarters outside of the above locations where the role can reasonably be performed from that location taking into consideration the operational, financial and customer requirements of the role, and an ability to attend a NSW Government workplace as required. At the point an employee is notified of our intention to assign them to a role, the relevant leader will discuss headquarter options.

Salary Service NSW Grade 11/12, with the base salary for this role starting at $157,569 base plus superannuation
