Apunipima Cape York Health Council is a community controlled Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health service, which provides culturally appropriate, family centred, primary health care services to the communities and people of Cape York.
About the Opportunity
The Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) Health Worker will work with and alongside the TIS Team and other multi-disciplinary team members through support services, education and promotion. This position is 12 month full time fixed term.
Under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld), there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community. The position is therefore only open to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicants.
About You
To be successful in this role you will have:
Essential:
Enrolled in or willing and able to undertake study for a Certificate III or higher in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care and complete the qualification within a specified timeframe.
Experience engaging with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients, and community members
Basic time management, numeracy, written and verbal communication skills.
Sound interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide range of clients and local service providers
Understanding of the historical and contemporary issues that impact on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and their communities, particularly in Cape York.
Ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in accordance with community protocols and customs.
Demonstrated understanding of the principles of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community control.
Must be willing and have the ability to travel in Cape York either by light aircraft or 4WD as required.
Desirable:
Experience within the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Health sector
Knowledge of smoking prevention and cessation programs and support
Knowledge of primary health care services
Mandatory requirements:
Current Queensland Driver's Licence
Current Blue Card positive notice or exemption, or willing and able to obtain prior to commencement
Australian Federal Police Check or willing and able to obtain one prior to commencement

Competitive salary range - $59,275 - $60,654 p.a. + 11.5% superannuation contribution
