Make a meaningful impact through Indigenous-led research

The School of Life and Environmental Sciences is currently seeking a Research Assistant - Stories of One Basin (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identified) based at the Biomedical Building, Australian Technology Park, Eveleigh to provide technical and research support for researchers associated with the One Basin Cooperative Research Centre (https://onebasin.com.au/).

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • collect data and information for supporting the 'Stories of One Basin' project
  • assist project researchers with research, workshops, and interviews
  • prepare written reports and keep them updated where necessary
  • work closely in a team and engage in face-to-face and online meetings and workshops.

About you

As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Research Assistant - Stories of One Basin (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identified) who has:

  • To identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person (as per the University's Confirmation of Identity Policy 2015)
  • a tertiary qualification in relevant field or equivalent relevant experience
  • demonstrated experience in a research environment or strong interest in working in research
  • experience in developing and working on research projects, including expertise in using research protocols, experimental design, ethics submissions, and grant applications
  • previous experience in doing literary searches, and preparing literary reviews for further analysis
  • a working understanding of relevant aspects of the Work Health and Safety Policy and related legislation, including Safe Laboratory Practices, as applicable to the work environment
  • excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with day-to-day operational matters
  • strong problem-solving skills and the ability to use initiative and exercise sound judgement and ability to prioritise workload during busy periods.

Eligibility & Documentation

This position has been designated for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people only under the provisions of section 126 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW). Applicants will be required to provide evidence to confirm that they are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person as per the University's Confirmation of Identity Policy 2015

To be eligible for this position, you must provide a statement and supporting documentation that addresses how you meet each of the following criteria for Aboriginality:

i. be of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent; and

ii. identify as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander; and

iii. be accepted as such by the community in which they live or have lived.

The University may request further information from applicants as required. Supporting documentation may include, but is not limited to, a letter of Aboriginality signed under the common seal from a recognised incorporated Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community organisation such as Land Council or Elders group, Aboriginal Medical Service or a letter on letterhead from a Local Aboriginal Land Council demonstrating membership of the Council.

You must have unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this employment to apply. Visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment.
