Are you a dynamic leader passionate about medical education and rural healthcare? We are seeking a Manager, Regional Medical Training to provide operational management, strategic direction and leadership of the College of Medicine and Dentistry’s undergraduate and postgraduate education programs and research at the Mackay Clinical School which is located at the Mackay Base Hospital.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Manager, Regional Medical Training, supports the College of Medicine and Dentistry’s activities in the development and coordination of vocational training opportunities for doctors at all stages of their medical training within the greater Mackay region. This position works closely with Hospital and Health Services Directors of Clinical Training and other internal and external stakeholders to build regional medical training capacity. This includes providing support for local medical practitioners to become supervisors, assisting health services to accredit new training posts and improving the coordination of the stages of medical training, to enable students intending to practice rurally the opportunity to complete as much their medical training as possible within regional and rural north Queensland.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensure the success of our programs by effectively planning and delivering high-quality education and training initiatives, including externally funded programs.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team across multiple sites, ensuring seamless coordination of medical training for students pursuing rural practice.
  • Foster strong stakeholder relationships with funding bodies, healthcare providers, educational institutions, and industry partners to meet College, Government, and community expectations.
  • Contribute to strategic planning by providing expert advice, shaping policies, and representing the College in key negotiations.
  • Drive continuous improvement by evaluating performance outcomes and implementing innovative strategies to enhance service delivery.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

To succeed in this role, you should have a relevant qualification in a related field, along with proven experience or the ability to develop proficiency in administering medical education and training within regional health service settings. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills are essential, as well as a deep commitment to excellence in medical education.

  • Proven experienc in program management, preferably in medical education or healthcare.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to manage distributed teams and drive engagement.
  • Highly developed communication, negotiation and influencing skills, including evidence of developing and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
  • A passion for rural and regional healthcare training and workforce development.

ABOUT THE RURAL HEALTH MULTIDISCIPLINARY TRAINING PROGRAM

The Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training (RHMT) program, a Federal Government initiative, expands training and placement opportunities for health professional students in rural and remote areas, building their confidence and competence for careers in these regions.

Within the College of Medicine and Dentistry, RHMT supports rural clinical schools, medical student placements, and the Regional Training Hubs initiative, which helps interns, junior doctors, and registrars complete postgraduate and vocational training locally. Working closely with Clinical Training Directors and Medical Education Units across northern Queensland, it facilitates new training posts, supervisor development, research opportunities, and regionally based registrar positions in various medical specialties.
