Other: This position attracts a District Allowance in addition to the base salary above.

Goldfields Region manages 8.6 million hectares of conservation reserves including national parks, conservation parks, nature reserves, timber reserves, State forest and former pastoral leases (proposed reserves). Staff within the region work with traditional owners in many of these reserves to help protect the natural and cultural values of the area and to ensure customary activities and traditional practices are maintained. Goldfields Region is also responsible for fire preparedness, weeds and feral animal control on 40.3 million hectares of unallocated Crown land and unmanaged reserves.

Kalgoorlie is the largest inland city in Western Australia, steeped with history and heritage. It remains a vibrant mining town and home to a young, family oriented and multicultural community. We currently have an opportunity for a Regional Leader Joint Management to join our team.

Under minimal direction from (Level 6) or reporting to (Level 7) the Regional Manager and working in close collaboration with the Aboriginal Engagement, Planning and Lands Branch, you will be responsible for:

  • Aboriginal engagement and joint management in the Goldfields Region.
  • Negotiating Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUA) and Joint Management Agreements, coordinating meetings with traditional owners and other stakeholders and contributing to the development of guidelines and standards for joint management and traditional owner engagement.
  • Liaising with other relevant departmental staff (e.g. Parks and Visitor Services) and government agencies to progress negotiations for park creation and joint management;
  • Developing regional communication strategies for ILUA and joint management negotiations.
  • Identifying issues emerging from joint management and initiating development of solutions which help maintain consistency and continued momentum of joint management in the region.

Selection Criteria

  1. Extensive (Level 7) or considerable (Level 6) knowledge and experience in engaging, communicating, liaising and working successfully with traditional owners to deliver land and cultural heritage management aspirations and goals through joint management, cooperation, or collaborative arrangements.
  2. Extensive (Level 7) or considerable (Level 6) experience in project management, and in researching and applying knowledge to protect and conserve traditional owner heritage and culture.
  3. Evidence of high level (Level 7) or well-developed (Level 6) oral communication and interpersonal skills and considerable (Level 7) or demonstrated (Level 6) experience in developing and maintaining successful strategic partnerships with internal and external stakeholders and other interest groups, with evidence at Level 7 of ability to analyse, resolve and respond to complex and detailed issues and effectively communicate at a range of levels.
