Lead Machine Learning Specialist (AI Engineer)
Location: Canberra, ACT (Hybrid - 3 days in office)
Contract: 6 months with 4 x extensions
Start Date: 1st July 2025

About the Role

Experis Australia has been engaged by a Federal Government agency in Canberra to identify a Lead Machine Learning Specialist (AI Engineer) for a 6-month contract, with the possibility of four extensions. This role is critical in shaping and guiding the AI/ML technical landscape within the agency, ensuring it aligns with current and future business needs.

As the Lead AI Engineer, you will have the opportunity to design, develop, and deploy AI/ML solutions while also providing strategic leadership to establish a sustainable AI/ML capability within the branch. The role requires both hands-on technical expertise and strong leadership skills to drive AI/ML initiatives effectively.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership - Guide the AI/ML strategy, ensuring alignment with the agency's objectives.

AI/ML Development & Deployment - Architect, design, and implement Microsoft-based AI/ML solutions that meet business needs.

Research & Advisory - Stay up to date with advancements in AI/ML technologies and provide expert advice on their application within the agency.

Hands-On Implementation - Oversee, but also actively contribute to, the development and deployment of AI/ML models.

Team Development - Provide leadership in establishing and growing the AI/ML capability within the branch.

Stakeholder Engagement - Collaborate with key internal and external stakeholders to drive AI/ML adoption and ensure project success.

Required Skills & Experience

Proven technical leadership in designing, developing, and deploying Microsoft AI/ML solutions.

Strong ability to advise on the latest advancements in AI/ML technologies and their practical applications.

Architectural expertise in designing end-to-end AI/ML solutions that align with business requirements.

Hands-on experience in overseeing and implementing AI/ML models in production environments.

Leadership and strategic advisory skills to establish and build a sustainable AI/ML capability within the agency.

Additional Information

Candidates must be Australian Citizens and be eligible to obtain or hold the required security clearance.

This role requires hybrid work, with three days per week onsite in the Canberra office.
